Thankful

Despite all the awful things going on in the world, I'm spending time this week practicing gratitude. It is, after all, the original meaning behind Thanksgiving.

I have a lot to be thankful for. I have an awesome new job, a roof over my head, enough to eat, a relatively comfortable existence. What I am most thankful for, though, is my network of friends and family (this includes all of you, BTW). Sometimes I am astonished at the love they show me. It gives me hope for humanity, which is sometimes hard to come by.

So I'm trying to not dwell on the things I wish I had, and be grateful for everything I do have.

I took today off as my birthday (it was Saturday) rather than Friday, thinking Monday would be slower at work, and it turned out to be a pretty nice day. I went over to Gates Pond for a walk, and found lots of dragonflies flitting about by the water. A couple of them even held still long enough for me to get a picture.

I've been seeing a few folks doing daily gratitude posts on Facebook, and thought my birthday month would be the perfect time to do that. I need to concentrate more on what I do have, rather than what I don't. From big to small, I'm giving thanks for all the good things in my life. It's something I need to remember, every day. I'll put the whole list up here at the end of the month. Here's an extra one for today, and just for my LJ buds: I'm thankful for all of you. You brighten up my day, every day.

omg yum, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

Musing on what to make for supper often occupies the last few minutes of the workday, and today I was looking at the grape tomatoes I had brought for a snack and failed to consume when it hit me that I had a bolting basil sitting on my kitchen table, and it's been ages since I've had a caprese salad. So I stopped at the store for some fresh mozzarella (and picked up a lovely focaccia as well) and made one. It was so delicious, I think I'll make it again tomorrow. And then I can toss that spindly basil (I have a fresh, young basil in my window box) and get one more thing off the kitchen table. Genius.

I love, love, love my iPhone. I thought it was true love with the iPad, but that was just a warm-up. This is truly the coolest thing I have ever owned. And I bought it myself, which makes it more special for me. I never thought I'd be in a position to be able to do that. It wasn't all that long ago that I had to choose between food and gas some weeks. Believe me, I count my blessings every single day. And I don't take anything for granted. I'm enjoying the heck out of things, and working hard to keep them. It's been a really long time since I've been consistently happy. I hope it stays this way!

Huge thanks to those of you who helped me out! Thanks to you, I can both eat and buy gas this week. Both were seriously in question. You guys are the best. :)
