So many memories, so many friends.
lizziebelle: (tree lady)
It seems that more and more of you are migrating to Dreamwidth, so I guess I should plant my flag here by posting. If you're reading this on LJ, are on DW and we haven't connected there yet, please connect with me so we don't lose touch!

Yesterday was the first really springlike day we've had in a while. After a cold, wet, snowy/sleety/rainy weekend, it was most welcome. After supper, I went for a walk along the river, where the water was as high as I'd ever seen it. The moon peeked through the bare branches, where buds are starting to swell.

The woods were full of starlings and red-winged blackbirds, all singing as the sun sank into the west. It was a glorious symphony.

I saw what I thought at first was a beaver swimming in the river, but when it climbed out of the water, I saw its long narrow tail and recognized it as a muskrat.

I know there are beavers around too, because I see the evidence of their teeth on the trees.

While I was busy trying to capture the muskrat, I totally missed the great blue heron until it took off and flew away. What a gorgeous creature! One of my favorites. I'm glad to see he's back this year.

Today we're back to rain, so no forays in search of the peepers my friends have been telling me they've been hearing. Perhaps tomorrow. I crossed over the river on my way home, and it's even higher than yesterday. I'm very glad I don't live closer to it!

So I see that more people are abandoning LJ because of the new TOS. I have no immediate plans to go anywhere, and I'm sad to be losing even more folks here. I do have a mirrored Dreamwidth journal, but this is still my primary residence, for now. I'm loathe to give it up, after all the wonderful folks I've met here. I hope you don't all leave, but if you do, please let me know where I can find you elsewhere on the interwebs (if we haven't already connected).

ten years

Ten years ago today, I created this journal. My life has changed a lot since then, mostly for the better, and is immeasurably enriched by the friends I have have found here. We've shared our ups and downs, celebrated each others' accomplishments and comforted our losses. Because of LJ, I have friends on both sides of the Atlantic, some of whom I've never met in the flesh but consider friends just the same. It's a friendly, welcoming place. No matter how many new social media sites that come along and steal away my time, I always come back here. Thank you, my friends, for sharing a part of your life with me!

An anonymous person gifted me with a paid account! Thank you so much, whoever you are! And thank you for supporting LJ; this place itself has been a gift to me.

Today is my 6th LJ anniversary. 6 years! Happy anniversary to me. :)

I love the friends and communities I have found here. I've enjoyed getting to know RL friends better here. I like being able to share the highlights (and lowlights) of my life, and how supportive everyone is. I appreciate having a place where I can share my photos, and getting feedback on them. Most of all, I enjoy reading about everyone's triumphs and struggles, and connecting on an emotional level with people I've never even met. You all rock.

Has anyone clicked the "random journal" button at the top of the LJ page? I just hit it a few times, and I am struck by two things: there are a lot of Russians on LJ, and there are a lot of emo teenagers on LJ. The first one surprised me, and the second one didn't, but it made me roll my eyes nonetheless.

I suppose that if they'd had LJ when I was a teenager, mine would've been pretty emo, too. It seems to be the job of teens to be emo.

It reminded me, once again, how utterly bizarre it is to be on the other side of the generation gap. When did that happen? And why didn't I notice? Probably because I don't have kids, and it took a while for my friends' kids to get old enough to notice how completely different their generation is from mine.

Speaking of which, I noticed yesterday that Barack Obama is two days younger than I am (and now you know just how old I am). That made me pause for a second. We might have a President who is my age. Yeesh. Young for a President, but really old for a professional athlete. *g*

lizziebelle: (have fun)
I keep getting emails from LJ with dire warnings that my paid account is about to expire. Do I want to renew it? Is it worth it? I've become rather fond of having lots of icons, but I haven't used very many of the features. Polls are fun, but I don't do them often enough. I always forget. Must think hard on this, I guess.

On the other hand, they're having a sale on Tempurpedic pillows at Job Lot. Now, that's something I can *really* use! My neck has been killing me for weeks. No matter what type of pillow I try, it's only good for a few weeks and then I get the cricks. These pillows, however, are the kind that conform to your neck. I have a feeling a new pillow will make me a lot happier than lots of icons. I think that's going to be my Yule present to me.

We just had our cookie exchange, and I am the proud owner of a bag full of cookies. When I signed up for this, I was thinking how much fun making the cookies would be; I wasn't thinking what the heck will I do with six dozen cookies? I will be bringing some to the coven Yule this Saturday, and likely to [livejournal.com profile] textiletart and company's xmas party on Monday. Mmmmmm, cookies!

There is food *everywhere* in this building. Several grateful groups have sent along gift baskets, which have been arranged on the kitchen table. The company bought us pizza for lunch, and of course there are cookies everywhere. We've all been grazing all day. I'm thinking supper is going to be a light one. Maybe toast.

Our Secret Santa exchange was this afternoon, also. Someone gave me a Barnes & Noble gift certificate! How thoughtful. :)

Not much work is getting done, but there's really not a lot to do today. I finished all my last runs yesterday, because we have an early deadline this week. We're working a half-day on Friday, so we'll be doing the classifieds Thursday afternoon. It's not a big time for advertising.

Ooh, Kitti said she was talking with a photographer friend, and he said there is a good chance we could get our pictures displayed in a downtown Springfield cafe! Wouldn't that be nifty? I should get some more of that canvas-texture photo paper; I love the way photos look on that, and a lot of my photos would work really well that way. I have some regular photo paper somewhere as well. Squee!

One of the features of a paid account is being able to read your friends' friends all on one page, which is shiny. I've actually found a couple of new additions to the f-list that way. In the past, I occasionally read friends' f-lists, but now I can really waste time! *g*

I'm making the cookies for our exchange tonight, so that I'm not running around like a chicken with its head cut off tomorrow night. I didn't want to make them too far in advance, though, so they'd be fresh. I have to bring twelve half-dozen packages for all the participants. Hey, wait, make that eleven... I'm the twelfth. Woo, cookies for moi! I have a stack of Chinese food boxes that I'd gotten a while back for another project that never happened, so the packaging is taken care of. I'm making potato chip cookies, which sound weird but they're really yummy. This should be fun. I had to call mum to make sure the batch would make enough (it wouldn't, so I doubled the recipe). If you want the recipe, just ask. Crushing the chips is the most fun part. *g*

I have a question for those of you who are paid users: how does one go about getting a custom mood theme? Where would one find such a thing, and how does one utilize it? I might as well go for broke, ya know? :)

I just checked my stats (I do that periodically, out of curiosity), and guess what? This is my 1,000th post! Woo, go me! *g*
