autumn river, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

The water has finally gone down enough that I was able to walk along the river path, for the first time since before Irene. I missed it so!

The woods were beautiful today )

It was very windy, but beautiful. I saw at least a dozen turkey vultures; they must be getting ready to migrate.

On the walk down to the park, I ran into an old friend whom I haven't seen in a long time. It was really good to see her and reconnect. Funny how choosing a certain route will make connections you wouldn't have otherwise; I had chosen that way at the last moment, and she was on that road, coming from a tag sale. I was just thinking about her recently, too, wondering where she was and what she was doing now. It was great to see she is doing well.

triplets, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went out into the woods this morning, where I found lots of fungi, and evidence of Irene's passage.

water, water, everywhere )

I couldn't get over to the path along the river at all. Every way over there was blocked by normally dry streambeds or wrecked bridges.

There was evidence of mud on the grass way over by the hawthorn tree, which is quite far from any stream. It must have been quite a flood.

I'm sad about the bridge. Last time it got wrecked by a flood, it took them two or three years to get it fixed.

Once the water goes down, I'll be able to get over to the river path again. Just not in the usual way.

hawthorn blossoms, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went on a lovely picnic and ramble through Stanley Park and the wildlife sanctuary today with [livejournal.com profile] sea_dark_wine and [livejournal.com profile] justjanus this afternoon. It was not as hot as yesterday, and there was a pleasant breeze. Everything was green green green, and lots of things were flowering, including the hawthorn tree. It has tons of blossoms this year! Much more than the past few seasons.

Also, )

I got to introduce my friends to the geese and swan, and show them some of my favorite places. Our friend the muscovy duck seems to be MIA, though; I haven't seen him for a couple of weeks.

They've torn down the cool pavilion at the park, which bums me out. My favorite fountain is still not turned on. But the park looks great otherwise, and it was a nice day to spend there with good friends.

Anyone else who'd like the guided tour, just let me know! Come on out to Westfield, it's not as far as you think. Well, if you live in Massachusetts, anyway. *g*

Today turned out much nicer than was forecast, so I had another pleasant walk through the park and woods. And look: daffodils!

pleasant )

It's just now starting to cloud over. I'm so glad it waited to do that!

The water is even higher this week at the wildlife sanctuary.

growing things )

It was still quite windy, but also warm enough to wear a sweatshirt and fleece vest. There were lots of people out walking, and I was greeted by several dogs. Green things are poking out of the ground all over the place. In another week, we should have daffodils and hyacinth. Spring is getting here, slowly but surely.

snowdrops emerging, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went down to the park to look for sings of spring, and I found a few. These snowdrops were buried beneath a foot of snow last time I was down there, and in a few days they will have flowers.

more signs )

The sidewalks are now free of ice and snow, but some of them have large puddles. The paths in the woods are still snow-covered, but mostly packed down enough to walk on. Mostly.

moving pictures )

It felt good to be outside and moving around. :)

snowshoers, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

It was the perfect day for walking in the woods. Warmer than it's been, mostly sunny, and the paths were well beaten down by skiers and snowshoers.

The river was mostly frozen over and covered in a blanket of snow, so it was strange not to hear it babbling away as I walked along it. With all this snow, I bet it will be higher than ever this spring.

quiet and white )

When I'm there, I'm there. I'm not worrying about finances, or thinking about what's on TV, or wondering what my friends are up to on LJ or Facebook. I'm not making plans, or deciding what to have for supper. I'm just there, with the trees and the river and the birds. That's what I love most about it, and why I miss it so when I haven't been there in a while.

spooky sky, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

Made it to 2011. How weird does that sound? It's like something out of science fiction. Twenty eleven. Some far-off time, when there are flying cars and aliens walking the streets. And replicants. Shouldn't we have those by now?

At least it was a nice day. A good way to start off the year. I put up my new calendar this morning (!) and started the day with oatmeal. Might as well start out healthy, yeah?

I took another long walk, this time down to the woods and park. I saw another owl, but as it was being chased by several raucous crows at the time, I didn't get any pictures. I did, however, get other pictures.

water, frozen and not )

I'm glad I got out there today. It's supposed to rain tonight/tomorrow morning, and I'm sure it will be quite slushy and slippery tomorrow. Not a good day to be tromping around in the woods.

I saw actual wildlife in the wildlife sanctuary today: an owl! And I was actually able to capture it with my camera! I was very excited. When I tried to creep closer, it flew away silently. Still, I was thrilled to see it and get a picture.

What was funny about it is I was listening to Harry Potter #2 at the time. They were talking about Errol the owl. :D

I'm not sure what type of owl this was, but it was quite large. About the size of Hedwig. It had brown and white striated feathers.

It was sitting in the tree, about head-high. I hope I didn't ruin a hunting opportunity for it!

There were lots of fungi in the woods today, but instead I'll share a lovely rosebud.

Yay, no runners out in the woods today! Actually, there were hardly any people at all, which was nice.

My friend Kat came down (and bought my old camera, yay), and we had a nice walk.
