may the force be with you
I rarely go see major movies on opening weekend, but I just couldn't wait, so I went to see the new Star Wars this morning. I was happy to see a 9:00 a.m. showing, since the nearest theatre is at the mall down the street and it's the Saturday before Christmas, which my years of retail experience tells me is the actual busiest shopping day of the year, despite all the hype of Black Friday. There were plenty of parking spaces and the theatre was nicely uncrowded.
I'm not going to spoil it, but I'll put it behind a cut anyway.
I loved it. It's everything I loved about the original trilogy, and nothing I hated about the second trilogy. Sure, there's nothing really original, but then the first Star Wars was hardly original. It hits all the right notes, has characters you can root for and bad guys to boo at, gives lovely nods to the first trilogy, and just makes you smile with glee for making you feel like a kid again. I loved seeing families there seeing it together.
I know a lot of people give him flak, but I like J.J. Abrams. I loved what he did with Star Trek, liked several of his shows (especially LOST), and he's a huge fan of Star Wars. If anyone could do it right, he could. And he did. He made it fun to go to the movies.
I'm old enough to have seen the original in the theatre when it was new, and to have realized how revolutionary it was. We had never seen anything quite like it before, with its huge starships and hyperdrive and aliens. It really changed science fiction movies in a big way, and for the better. It paved the way for the genre we know and love today. I'll still always be a Trekkie, but Star Wars will always have a special place in my heart.
So, yeah. I loved it. If you are in any way a fan of the original movie, go see it. Don't sit there counting how many lens flares J.J. added, just enjoy the show. And it's definitely worth seeing in 3D.
