random journals

Has anyone clicked the "random journal" button at the top of the LJ page? I just hit it a few times, and I am struck by two things: there are a lot of Russians on LJ, and there are a lot of emo teenagers on LJ. The first one surprised me, and the second one didn't, but it made me roll my eyes nonetheless.

I suppose that if they'd had LJ when I was a teenager, mine would've been pretty emo, too. It seems to be the job of teens to be emo.

It reminded me, once again, how utterly bizarre it is to be on the other side of the generation gap. When did that happen? And why didn't I notice? Probably because I don't have kids, and it took a while for my friends' kids to get old enough to notice how completely different their generation is from mine.

Speaking of which, I noticed yesterday that Barack Obama is two days younger than I am (and now you know just how old I am). That made me pause for a second. We might have a President who is my age. Yeesh. Young for a President, but really old for a professional athlete. *g*

er, indeed!

yes i know there's a lot of russians on LJ. If you ever click on the links that list 'most popular interests', some of the high numbers are indeed in the cyrillic script. not sure why either!

when i was around 17-18 i did used to keep a paper-diary. occasionslly i contemplate typing in the entries into LJ. Just for completeness-sake. But yes, it would have been quite 'emo' too (though of course when we were young, 'emo', as a word, didn't exist ... !!).

i am (by inference) one generation younger than you, but even i feel old sometimes. but then you're only as young as you feel, and i surround myself with people who feel young (even if most of them are around my age!).

:)

Weird, yeah? I've always thought of politicians, especially in higher offices, as much older. Not so much any more!

One possible reason for all the Russian LJ users:

It could be that SixApart, the company that merged with the original LiveJournal company, was bought out by SUP, a Russian Corporation... I think SUP was its on blog company in Russia, and at the time of the merger, its users just became LJers...

(This all happened around the time that LJ introduced the "innovation" of the ability of users to "flag" other journals for inappropriate content, which many saw as an aspect of Soviet Russian cultural attitudes)

Right, I'd forgotten about that.

Whoops, that was me. LJ logged me out for some reason.

You've got my vote

I noticed yesterday that Barack Obama is two days younger than I am

So, that means there's nothing stopping you from running for President.

Ha! There are plenty of things preventing me from running for President, but alas, age is not one of them. *g*
