Today was the coldest day all winter. I certainly hope it doesn't get this cold again this year! The high temperature only reached 12 degrees F. I have stayed holed up in my aerie all weekend. I may venture out tomorrow to do laundry, but I have been happy to stay snug at home. I'm getting caught up on all my shows.

Earlier today I discovered that I had no hot water. Nothing was coming out of the tap. Got in touch with my landlord, who came over to deal with it. At first he thought my water heater was dead, but it turned out to be frozen pipes. He used a hair dryer to warm them up, and after about an hour they finally thawed. It was nice to be able to take a shower and wash the dishes!

He also replaced the knob on my front door; the key I had was a copy of a copy, and didn't really work when it gets very cold. Fortunately I have another door where it works fine, but I don't like having to come in through the bedroom with snowy boots on. So all's well that ends well. At least my heat is working (I have electric heat); his was only working in half his house. Not the kind of weather you want to have malfunctioning heat!

I have tomorrow off; I took it as my floating holiday. I figured most of the people I'd be calling would have it off, and it would be a wasted day.

I celebrated Valentine's Day by making peanut butter buckeyes. Even better than Reese's! Dark chocolate, of course.

I think I'll let the hot water tap drip overnight. I don't think I want frozen pipes again.

How is your weekend going?

Chill

Friday night, I went to see Heart at the Hanover Theater in Worcester. The show was fantastic; they did all my favorites, including Keep My Love Alive, These Dreams, Magic Man, Crazy on You and lots more. And of course they did a Led Zeppelin song, Black Dog. B and I went to a nice Tapas restaurant before the show and had sangria and yummy food. We both enjoyed the show immensely. I heart Heart!

I have loved them since I was 15, and I heard Magic Man for the first time. I love it when women rock! They still have it, in spades. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

Yesterday, I just couldn't get warm, so I went back to bed and slept for a few more hours. I guess the week finally caught up with me. At least I didn't get sick after going to New York like I did the last two times I went. I just had a day of feeling yucky. Today I am much better; I actually made it out this morning to do laundry and some grocery shopping.

I am really tired of being cold. I've reached the part of winter when I've had it. My hands and lips are dry as parchment. Someday, I hope to be well-off enough to go someplace warm for January and February. :::brrrr:::

cold weekend

porch décor, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I really like this house. It's one of the houses I included in my Picture Westfield portfolio. It looks quite festive in its holiday decorations.

It was very cold here in New England this weekend. I walked down to the library yesterday and took out a couple of movies: The Time Traveler's Wife and The Lovely Bones. Both based on books I had read, and both, I imagine, difficult to make the transition to film. I think both did a pretty good job of it, 'though I liked TTTW better of the two. The girl who played Susie in TLB is remarkable; I can see a long career ahead for her if she chooses to stay with acting.

I went for a somewhat shorter walk today, because it was just too durned cold. It never made it past the upper twenties. :::brr::: I'm not ready for winter! We're in the stretch of darkest days now: although the Solstice is Thursday, the days don't start actually getting longer until the 26th. At least we've passed the earliest sunset already.

I'm looking forward to the return of the light.

perched, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

It was fracking cold today, despite the sunshine. Cold, and windy. I went out anyway, because it's spring, dammit! Even the crocuses were bundled up against the cold, refusing to open. This squirrel was perched on a utility pole, chattering away at me, across from the police station. I think he was complaining about the cold, too.

Trying to deal with some unwelcome drama making the world even harder to deal with than usual this week. I'm vacillating between wanting to withdraw completely, and wanting to run away from it all. Neither is a viable option. Going to attempt to write some of it out of me during Earth Hour this evening. Next to walking in the woods, that's the best therapy I know.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

drape, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

We're back in the deep freeze, so I'm back to posting pictures of spring. I didn't think you'd mind. *g*

I've been alternating between sympathy and amusement while watching my friends & cousins in Texas complain on Facebook about the cold. I know they're not used to it, but now they have a little taste of what we've been experiencing. I hope it gets warmer soon for all of us. At least they don't have two feet of snow on their roofs like we do. O_o

Speaking of snow, earlier in the week they were talking about another "snow event" for tomorrow, but today they're saying it will go out to sea. Thank goodness for small favors.

If you're not reading [livejournal.com profile] pjthompson's LJ, go over there now and enjoy the eerie and lovely story and song she shared today. Both gave me chills.

still cold

foxglove, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

Of course the coldest day was a Monday. Thank goodness my car started this morning. Yay for Die-Hard batteries!

More snow expected for the morning, but not much. Just enough to be annoying, I'm sure. Everybody's panicking over a possible storm later in the week, which may miss us altogether (oh, please, please miss us).

At least I had a couple of decent sales today.

Enjoy the flowers. :)

enough!

wooded, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I have officially reached the point where I'm sick of winter. It's supposed to be -14 tonight. The forecast high for tomorrow is 10 degrees. Ouch.

I'm getting cabin fever, but I just can't bring myself to get all bundled up to go outside.

I hope this cold snap is over soon!

frozen solid

frozen solid, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

We're back to the bitter cold, and the drainpipe out in back of my office shows it.

It had started snowing by the time I got to Westfield yesterday, and there was a dusting this morning when I left for work. Not enough to shovel, or mess up the roads, and not quite enough to be really pretty.

It's supposed to stay very cold for the next few days, too. Brr. It really makes me want to stay in and do nothing. If I could, I would totally be a snow bird. I would not go to Florida, though (except to visit friends there); I would go to the desert. I can feel the hot, soft sand between my toes even now.

icy

crystal cave, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I braved the cold and walked down to the park on my lunch break today. I really needed to get outside and get moving, you know? I have to fight my tendency to be a slug when it gets really cold.

There's not a whole lot to look at these days, but there is some pretty, frosty ice.

DSCN3186

The pond is almost completely frozen over; there is just a little patch of open water in the middle, and the gulls were congregating around it. They looked mighty chilly, too. Unfortunately, the grey skies made for poor photographic conditions, and I wasn't able to capture that scene. Just picture a bunch of huddled gulls, looking quite put-out, and you'll have the gist.

This week has been very draining, in several different ways, so I'm planning on staying close to home this weekend. I do have to walk downtown tomorrow, but it's supposed to be less cold. Maybe I'll extend my walk a few blocks and hit Dunkin Donuts for a decaf to warm me on the walk back home. ;)

I'm sure those of you who live in Minnesota are laughing at me right now (like I am laughing at my Florida friends who are freaking out that it's in the 50's), but let me just say in my defense that I am not usually such a wuss when it comes to the cold. It's just that it came so suddenly, with no adjustment period. I'm just as bad when it gets hot really suddenly in the summer. I'm not much for extremes of either direction, especially when it hits like a ton of bricks out of nowhere. ;)

cold, much?

Bit-O-Honey, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

It's now 13 degrees, Weatherbug tells me, and that's the warmest it's been all day. Oh, and that's Fahrenheit. I wish it were Celsius.

Needless to say, I didn't go anywhere on my lunch break. It's just too frakking cold. There's a wicked wind out there, too, blowing snow around in huge, drifting clouds, and rattling the trees.

This pile of candy was sitting in a dish in the breakroom, and I liked the bright colors on this white, frigid day.

At least the sun is out.

It would be so nice to have a pleasant weekend. Alas, this one is bitter cold and windy, so I am holed up here in the batcave, dreaming of summer. I so miss walking down to the park, but as I value my ears (and fingers & toes), I think I will wait for a warmer day to make that trek again.

cocooning

It's only just past 3:30, and already the sun has dipped behind the building next door, throwing my apartment into shadow. The afternoon sunshine was nice; I sat on my bed, reading, for a good part of it (the sun doesn't really come into my living room this time of year). I'm reading The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff, which is set in a fictionalized Cooperstown, renamed Templeton after James Fenimore Cooper's also fictionalized Cooperstown. I went to summer camp near there, and we went to the Farmer's Museum in eighth grade, so I'm familiar with the area, if not the town proper. So far, it's pretty interesting. I like that it opens with the finding of a dead monster floating on the lake.

I forgot to turn off my clock-radio alarm yesterday, so when it went off this morning, I was quite confused. I thought for a moment that it was Friday, then I remembered doing the proofs yesterday and groaned as I turned it off. I was having the usual strange dreams when I awoke, which stayed with me and made me foggy-headed all morning. I did eventually go back to bed and take a nap, which I really needed. All I want to do lately is sleep, and this bitter cold isn't making me want to do much else. It feels like the depths of winter today.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit warmer, or at least less windy, so perhaps I will venture out. I bet there is some good ice down at the wildlife sanctuary. It's been too cold all week to go out for long, and I'm itching to go out and take pictures.

For today, however, I'm staying wrapped up in my warm cave, and I salute those of you brave enough to face the bitter winds tonight. Have a wonderful time, and I'll be thinking of you!
