TV thoughts

I'm not sure if any of you have seen this show, so I'll put it under a cut in case you a) don't care, or b) don't want to be spoiled.
I was curious about Dexter after reading rave reviews from TV writers whose opinions I've found to be spot on, for the most part. It was an intriguing premise: a serial killer who only kills serial killers. So I put it on my Netflix queue, and I'm in the middle of the third disc now.
I really like the characterizations, from Dex himself to the cops he works with. His sister is a bit annoying, but that's her purpose, I think. I love that she's dating his nemesis! That was a stroke of brilliance. I fingered him as the killer almost immediately.
I usually get annoyed with secondary characters whose B stories have nothing to do with the main action, but the way they weave everyone into the main story is just great writing. For example: Angel. His whole divorce story seemed completely superfluous, until he met the woman in the bar with the prosthetic hand with the different colored nail polishes, which led him to Rudy, who stabbed him in the parking garage, whose attack Dexter ended up investigating (which is where I left off tonight).
The flashbacks with Dex's father, explaining how he came to be the way he is, are really interesting, and woven into the storyline seamlessly. Even the weakest storylines, like the one involving his girlfriend (who I find annoying, even though she's played by the actress who played Darla on Buffy & Angel), are there for a reason; in this case, to show his emotional detachment. Also his emotional growth, such as it is.
I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of season one, and then I'll have to wait for season two to come out on DVD because I don't have Showtime.
For the rest of you, and due to popular demand, here is a gratuitous puppy pic:

Since she's gone off to her new home, there probably won't be more, unless Beth brings her in for a visit. Enjoy!
