Today's urban nature walk was at Bussey Brook Meadow Urban Wild, which is part of the Arnold Arboretum. Led by [livejournal.com profile] urbpan, only two others showed up, but we had a very nice ramble. We saw lots of interesting insects and wildflowers, snails, birds, and fungi.

It's been a while since I've been to the Arboretum, so I was glad to see parts of it I've never seen. It's been one of my favorite places for over 20 years. I used to live right down the street from it, and have spent a lot of time there. It's where I first became interested in nature photography.

I took a nap this afternoon, because I've been unable to sleep in this weekend, and I had the most intense, cinematic dream. It featured a homicidal, shape-shifting female cop. I had to write the whole thing down when I woke up, because it really was like a little movie. Except I didn't get to see the ending, because I woke up. I guess I'll have to write it.

As I sit here wrapped in layers against the chill, I thought I'd share some of the more fun photos I took in New York last weekend.

Above is my cuz's dog, Izzy, just as she and the swan noticed each other. I was really happy to get that shot.

You can see the whole set here.

All in all, it was a fun time, and I'm so glad the frigid weather waited until after I got home!

For the first time since the beginning of July, I've had a weekend without any plans with other people. While I've enjoyed all the things I've been doing with folks, I've been looking forward to having a weekend when I could be spontaneous, or do nothing at all. But yesterday I wanted to do something, and after crossing various things off the list, Mount Auburn Cemetery popped into my head, and that's where I went.

Walk with me... )

The weather was just perfect, and it only started clouding up as I was leaving. It's a beautiful, peaceful place, and I still haven't seen all of it!

It's a popular place with birdwatchers, and I saw (and heard!) several hawks, including one that flew right over my head.

If anyone wants to go with me, I'm totally up for another trip there. I'll bet it's just gorgeous when the leaves turn!

Collinwood, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went down to Newport yesterday with my friend B to visit C, who lost everything in a fire recently. We took him some clothing, toiletries, and gift cards, and spent a very pleasant afternoon tooling around the lovely city of Newport. I definitely need to spend some more time there.

Pictured above is the Carey Mansion, which fans of the original Dark Shadows may recognize as the exterior of Collinwood. The pic was taken through a gap in the hedge, as it is a private residence.

I highly recommend visiting Newport. It was just what we needed. :)

First, some peonies for the Lizard Queen. lots (and lots) of pictures) )

I did laundry while I uploaded all the pix (over 100!). You can see the lot here

The last day of my vacation was an absolutely gorgeous one. The high winds were gone, the sun was out, and it was warm enough for fleece and a vest rather than a coat. I went for a very long walk through Stanley Park and the wildlife sanctuary, and enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine.

nature rocks )

My DSL was slow again today, and iPhoto was being uncooperative with some of the pix, so I'll upload the rest of them tomorrow. I also took a video at the river that I'll upload tomorrow. I sure do hope that I win that new computer on Facebook! This one is just frustrating.

I'm glad my week off ended with nice weather. They're expecting rain for tomorrow. At least it's not snow!

Today was a crazy-busy day at work. Which is good: busy means more money. Some of it was catching up from yesterday, and some was chasing after ad artwork and proofs, but a lot of it was selling.

Anyhoo, in between the craziness, I managed to upload the rest of yesterday's pix.

enjoy )

I'm so glad I got (most of) a day to enjoy the lovely weather, because today it's back to cold and dreary. I hope to scrape out some hiking fun on Sunday with [livejournal.com profile] buymeaclue (and the yellowdog!). So far, the forecast is good. Cross your fingers for us!

Memorial Bridge, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I got sprung from jury duty around 11:30, so I wandered around downtown Springfield and took a bunch of pictures. With the assistance of a helpful cop, I finally found the Quad, where they have a sculpture honoring Dr. Suess, who was born in Springfield (what the guidebooks fail to mention is he got the heck out of here as soon as he could and never came back).

downtown )

Then I came home, had some lunch, changed, and went to the park. Those pix will be coming along; I only have so much patience for wrestling with iPhoto. Dinner break time. :)

I also took some movies at the park, of the geese, ducks, and swan. Those will be up sometime tomorrow.

*****

I knew I would probably not get impaneled on a jury, since my number was 100. I sat in on one impaneling, which was for a criminal trial. Some kid who was caught selling cocaine in a school zone. The courtrooms always look smaller in person than they do on TV! The judge was an attractive, fifty-something African-American woman who looked like she could be Michelle Obama's older sister. It was interesting to watch her, especially as she talked to the people who were trying to get out of serving. She dismissed a surprising number of them. Everyone was very nice, and thanked us for being there. I'm glad I got out early, but it was an interesting experience.

It was cold but sunny this morning, so I went out to capture some more Autumn while I could.

colorful world )

I skipped going to the meet & greet today, because I don't want to drive anywhere I don't have to. However, I may have figured out what was wrong with the car, and may have even fixed it myself. I noticed yesterday that there was a stain on the curb in front of where I park, sort of like an oil leak stain, but not where oil would leak. I got out my owner's manual, and figured out that it had to be either the transmission fluid or the power steering fluid. I popped the hood, checked the AT dipstick (which was fine), opened up the PS reservoir (which was empty - aha!), and walked down to Rite Aid for some PS fluid. Three bucks and a brisk walk later, and the reservoir is full. Cross your fingers that was all it was! If it is, I will take the car to get the leak fixed as soon as I can scrape up the dough. If it isn't, well, I don't want to go there. I'm trying to think positively.

The sun has gone behind the clouds now, but the heat is on, and it's nice & cozy in here. Tomorrow promises to be rainy, and I think it's time to get the sweaters & turtlenecks out of the trunk. That taste of winter we had this week tells me it's time.

The sun finally came out this afternoon, so I went off into the woods to enjoy some more autumn.

today's darlings )

A bunch of pix didn't upload because iPhoto just isn't cooperating today. It's being old and cranky again. I'll get to them tomorrow.

I took a video of the river, which I will also (try to) upload tomorrow. Once I figure out how. *g*

For part of my walk, a girl (who looked to be around 13) was wandering around calling for Anna, who I presumed to be lost. Then she found Anna, and the two of them (which turned out to be three) screeched at each other for a few minutes. Sheesh. I ran into the three of them on the way out of the woods, and the one who turned out to be Anna held back and walked next to me. She said she felt like a third wheel with the other two. I asked her who was lost, and she asked how I knew someone was lost. I said because she (pointing to the redhead) was yelling for someone for half an hour. She admitted to being the lost party. They were giggly, silly girls, and it amused me that Anna felt I was a safe person to talk to when she got annoyed with her companions. When I went off in a different direction, they all waved good-bye. *g*

I also got mobbed at one point by three or four dogs who had just come out of the river. Animals and kids, I tell you! They love me.

ETA Oh! As it turns out, there really is a giant snapper. I saw him, just below the water, today. He's rather large; the Monster of the Little River. More than a foot long, from what I could see.

I tried taking a nap today, because I was up at the crack of dawn as usual, but my mother called, and then the landscaper came with his noisy lawnmower, and I just gave up and went for a walk.

Autumn arrives by the calendar on Tuesday, and it's starting to show its face around the neighborhood already. It's going to get down into the thirties tonight, so I bet we'll have a lot more color in a few days.

here's what I found today )

One of the best things about living in New England is all the maple trees, especially this time of year. I'm hoping that we get good color this year; last year was a bit disappointing.

For those of you not on Facebook, my cousin (the one who lost her husband last week) had her baby on Thursday. Sophia Rose is healthy and beautiful. Rose was her grandmother's name. My cousin is doing as well as can be expected, and is very happy to have Sophia with her. So are we.

Sorry I'm too brain-dead to come up with something clever for Talk Like a Pirate Day, but perhaps later on I'll drink some rum and pop in Pirates of the Caribbean or something. *g*
