Mount Auburn

For the first time since the beginning of July, I've had a weekend without any plans with other people. While I've enjoyed all the things I've been doing with folks, I've been looking forward to having a weekend when I could be spontaneous, or do nothing at all. But yesterday I wanted to do something, and after crossing various things off the list, Mount Auburn Cemetery popped into my head, and that's where I went.
Mount Auburn was the first cemetery in this country that was also a botanical park. It's full of gorgeous trees, and is laid out with paths and roads that all have botanical names.
There are a lot of famous people buried there, like Winslow Homer, Buckminster Fuller, Longfellow, and Charles Bulfinch. I found some of their markers thanks to the helpful new map I got at the front gate.
Probably the most famous memorial, just due to its size and grandeur, is the one to Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Christian Science church.
It sits at the edge of a small lake, and looks just as pretty from across the water.
And then, of course, there are all the cool statuary and gravestones.
The weather was just perfect, and it only started clouding up as I was leaving. It's a beautiful, peaceful place, and I still haven't seen all of it!
It's a popular place with birdwatchers, and I saw (and heard!) several hawks, including one that flew right over my head.
If anyone wants to go with me, I'm totally up for another trip there. I'll bet it's just gorgeous when the leaves turn!
