so long, and thanks for all the fish
Apr. 30th, 2005 09:50 amOK, I saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy last night, and here's my take on it. It was OK. I didn't love it, but I liked it. It strayed quite a bit from the book, but then the book strayed from the radio show, and the TV show, etc. I know Douglas Adams saw it as a kind of work in progress. But I didn't love the ways it strayed. And it left out some of the funnier bits. I won't spoil it for you if you plan to see it. It was worth seeing. The way they handled Zaphod's two heads was a bit odd. Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin was inspired casting. There's a really funny bit involving yarn. They left in the whale and the bowl of petunias. There are cameos from the TV Marvin and Arthur, and Doulas' head. Zaphod seemed to be doing an impression of Dubya, which was funny if you think about it- in the HHGG universe, the President is a figurehead that draws attention away from the real power. Dubya wouldn't get it.
So, if you're a fan, go see it. Let Hollywood know that a funny, smart Science Fiction movie has an audience.
