power outage
Aug. 23rd, 2005 11:08 amWhen I got home yesterday, the power was out. I suppose, in hindsight, the power company truck outside of my building should have been a clue, but no. I didn't even notice that the air conditioning unit wasn't on, either. When I flipped the switch for the kitchen light, I thought for a moment that the bulb had burnt out. A couple of seconds later, my brain went "hey!" Ding! No power. No problem, it's still light out till about 8, I can deal. I made myself a salad for dinner and sat down to read. The power came back on a few minutes after 7.
A while later, I went in to sign on & check my email. I kept getting a message telling me that my password had expired, and I vaguely remember this happening before but I don't remember the fix. So I call Verizon, and there is a long wait. When I eventually get a live person, he tells me how to fix it (trash the prefs file), but it still happens. Then he says, "oh, you're in MA. They're having problems there." D'oh!
So. It's monday night, there's nothing on TV, and I can't sign on. This is not a bad thing, because I had just gotten a great new book from the library. Now I had no excuse not to read! I read until 10:00... this book is really good! I can't wait till lunch to read some more. It's The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'll be giving my review after I finish it!
