Grey Friday
Nov. 27th, 2009 06:59 pmYes, another grey November day. But! I was not at work, and that made it considerably brighter. I slept late, which is a rare treat. I watched cheesy movies on the telly (mostly old James Bond), had a turkey sandwich that couldn't be beat, and when I noticed that it was no longer raining, I went for a walk. I wandered around town a bit, walking through downtown and out across the new bridge. It was too dreary to take any interesting pictures, but it was nice to get out of the house for a while.
When I came home, I found that they were having a White Collar marathon on USA. If you haven't seen this show yet, I recommend checking it out - it's a lot of fun. Plus, cute boy! Really cute boy. It's a sort of caper-FBI mashup, with great characters and interesting stories.
I did *not* go shopping today. I wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near a store today, even if I did have money to spend. I worked in retail for *mumblemumble* years, and I'm convinced that the term "Black Friday" was originally coined by salespeople who feared the throngs of desperate shoppers looking for bargains. I try to avoid the whole consumer culture thang, myself. I'd much rather give, and receive, something from the heart rather than something from a big box store. Something handmade, an experience together, even cookies are better than whatever the ad agencies have convinced the public they must have or their lives won't be complete. I realize this sounds hollow coming from someone who makes her living selling advertising, but my customers aren't Best Buy or Sears, they're mostly small businesspeople who offer actual services to their customers, like electricians and painters. So yeah, I'm a bit cynical, but not really hypocritical. *g*
