cabin fever

I spent most of this weekend inside; I really hate this heat, and I found it difficult to get up the ambition to go anywhere. I meant to go to Grafton and buy more tomato plants, but I never made it there. I did go to Lowe's today to buy critter repellant to protect my sunflowers from the dadgummed woodchucks, and popped into the brand-spanking-new Market Basket next door to check it out, but that was it. They're only 5 minutes from my house.

That a/c unit is the best $100 investment I think I've ever made. It's quite pleasant in here. I don't need to be cool, but I do need to be not hot. Mission accomplished.

Now, the skies grow darker and the wind grows stronger as those storms make their way here. Hopefully they won't do too much damage as they cool us down and water our gardens. :::fingers crossed::: On the news, I'm watching floods and fires across our country. More tornadoes across Oklahoma. Strange days.

heatwave

In case you haven't heard, we're having a heatwave here in New England. I do believe it's hotter here than in New Orleans, which doesn't happen very often!

I have discovered that my apartment becomes an oven when it's hot. I'm on the second floor, with the sun shining on me all afternoon, so even with the blinds closed, it's pretty awful in here. And they were calling for at least three days of hot and muggy. So I broke down and went to Target, and bought an a/c unit. At least it was on sale! It's a small one, only 5,000 btu (whatever that means). I lugged it up the stairs, uncrated it, and installed it myself. I was literally dripping with sweat when I finished. I turned that baby on, jumped in the shower, and hoped it would work.

It was so pleasantly cool in here by this morning, I could have cried. I could sleep! Oh, blessed sleep, which is so elusive when it's hot & muggy. I get pretty cranky when I can't sleep. That little unit is just the right size to cool off this little apartment.

So it looks like I will survive the summer without melting into a quivering puddle. Thank goodness!
