black squirrels

There are a lot of black squirrels here in Westfield. The original black squirrels, so the story goes, were brought here as a gift to the man who founded Stanley Park, from Michigan I believe. The only other place I've seen them (not having been to Michigan) is in Ontario, Canada. They've become a symbol of Westfield, and you can buy hats, t-shirts, bumper stickers, and more at the gift shop downtown (I have a magnet on my fridge). I really like them; for some reason, they seem cuter to me than the plain old grey ones. I've seen every shade of grey to black, and even one family that was black with blond tails, so the squirrels seem not to be racist in these parts. That makes me smile. :)
This one played peek-a-boo with me yesterday, clearly hoping I had a treat for him. He reminds me of the one that, the day after I had tossed a leftover piece of bagel with peanut butter outside my apartment, looked at me expectantly when I left for work. "Please, ma'am, may I have some more?" he seemed to be saying. *g*
