and it just keeps coming

Today is one of those "aargh" days you just can't wait for to be over. After the news of the layoffs this morning, we get an email telling us they're doing away with the "Bucks" program (play money we can give each other for whatever we think appropriate, such as being really helpful, and then cash in for stuff, like movie tickets). We have until the end of March to cash them in. So of course we're all giving them out like crazy.

Then we get an email telling us they will no longer provide breakfast after the company meetings. The response to that was a flurry of emails saying "I'll bring O.J." and "I'll bring bagels, who wants to bring cream cheese?" and the like. The employees here rock.

So sacrifices are being made. What I want to know is, what are the owners sacrificing? My money's on nothing. I really don't think they're cutting back on anything. Yeah, I'm cynical. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, washed the car with it.

Time to go home, thank the gods.

Owners don't sacrifice. They don't take pay cuts. They don't give back bonuses.

But sometimes they lose their shirts.

I worked for a small company a few years ago, when where we hit a big bump in the road, the owners took pay cuts along with everybody else. But that's unusual, I guess.

Shoot, that really sucks. Keep your resume current, and try to get into a space where you've made a conscious choice whether to stay or look elsewhere, and you revisit that choice frequently. That way, you'll be at least a little in control of your own situation.
