shining armor, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went with [livejournal.com profile] sea_dark_wine and [livejournal.com profile] justjanus to the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester yesterday to look at, well, armor. It was interesting and fun.

It's a big, square building that has 4 floors of arms and armor. The top floor is open on the side and looks down at the third floor, which is a vaulted gallery.

It's amazing how many ways man has come up with to kill and maim. The collection of swords and pikes is quite impressive, though not laid out in a manner that photographs well.

At the end of the month there will be a Viking display, and they hold roller jousts, which I was told by the gal at the desk is indeed how it sounds: people jousting on roller skates. Sounds fun as well as dangerous. *g*

I've wanted to go for the longest time because of your stories about it!

It is! There must have been someone whose job it was to shine it. ;)

I grew up less than 5 miles from there, so it's always really weird when I see people posting about how they always wanted to see it/visit it. I had a friend visit from Maryland who had it on her must-see agenda, despite the fact that at the time I was living one town over from Salem.

It's a bit whip-lashy, especially since on more than one occasion my brother and I would be, "I'm bored. I know! Let's go to Higgins!"

It's funny how we never see local attractions as something anyone would want to see. When I was growing up, my parents would always take us to whatever historic landmarks there were around us. I've seen every fort in New York State at least once. ;)

These days when Roger and I are back in Wisconsin, I try to find time to take him to local attractions I last saw when I was a child. They're usually still interesting, although now I'm seeing them through more experienced eyes. We went to a historic house last summer when we were out there (a place where Lincoln once spent the night during a speaking tour!) and it was fun to find out that some of the information they give out on tours has changed as their research has turned up new things or disproved things they used to think were true.

That's interesting. I wonder what might have changed at the places I went as a kid?

Nice ! I missed this post, somehow!

Roller jousts sound bizarre - I always liked the idea of mountain-bike jousting!

Wow, it sounds much more dangerous on bikes!
