Taking a break

I've had to step back and take a break from Facebook for a bit. The political posts (from all sides) were getting too much for me. It makes me sad (and a bit angry) when I see things posted that are based on ignorance and hatred. A bunch of my relatives are very conservative, the kind you just can't argue with because their brains just work differently from mine. It makes me despair that there can ever be anything but discord in this country, when people who love each other can so vehemently disagree. When provable facts don't matter. When "truth" is anything but objective.

And to be fair, some of my liberal friends are just as bad, posting things that are deliberately provocative.

All it's doing is adding to my anxiety level, which is already far too high. So they can duke it out without me for a while.

it's one of the reasons i don't use facebook very often, and why my name there is not what they remember it to be.

It's so disheartening. Everything is so polarized. And some folks get off on making it even more so. :(

You're very wise to back away from anything that's stressing you. It's not as if you can do anything to change these people's minds because they're not working from evidence and logic but from an almost religious belief.

That's very true. When I do go back on, some people are getting hidden. It would cause too much drama to simply unfriend them.

I hear ya. I stopped posting my little funny things (even adding the caveat to the one, I felt a little bad about it), and definitely ignored some of the comments. Some of the cousinly posts were pretty wild. I'll let you know when the coast is clear, if you want. xoxox

Heh, thanks! I just want to have fun, ya know? I feel like posting political stuff is part preaching to the choir, part falling on deaf ears. I try to keep it light, but some folks just like to rock the boat. No, thanks. ;)

I have to stay away from certain media for the same reasons. It's also why I don't blog about political stuff, even though I have strong opinions and am often tempted to--but then I think how my blog is, for me, a peaceful oasis where I focus on writing. I don't want to get into online fights with people. I want to keep the passions of politics in another part of my life.
