I went on another Urban Nature Walk this morning, led by urbpan. This month, we met at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester (Boston). What's notable about this cemetery is that it's the only one in the country with a trolley running through it.
It sits on the banks of the Neponset River, a lovely oasis in the midst of busy Dorchester.
The foliage is still quite colorful there, being so close to the ocean.
One thing we all found strange was how many memorials were decorated for Halloween, with one in particular being quite elaborate.
What made this one even stranger is that both the people on the headstone appear to still be alive. Check out the dates.
This one had a pair of boots with plants growing in them:
And here's a first: we saw a ghost! We all saw it, and I managed to capture it with my camera.
We didn't see a whole lot of natural phenomena of note, but Jef managed to find a nifty purple mushroom:
And of course there was plenty of the local rock, Roxbury Puddingstone.
Last night, I went to the public Samhain ritual put on by the SEF. It was based on the Norse myths, and they did a fabulous job. We walked through the woods on a path lit by luminarias, and met various gods and other spirits on the journey, who asked questions and gave gifts. It was simple yet powerful. I'm very glad I went.
How was your weekend?
