lizziebelleI did make it to Walden Pond today, and I'm really glad I finally went. It's a lovely place.
I was surprised by how many people were there; I expected it to be fairly quiet today. I guess it's a popular place, even on a cloudy November day. I walked all the way around the pond, and took one of the side paths through the woods and up a rather steep hill topped with large boulders covered in lichens.
Near the parking area, there is a reconstruction of Thoreau's cabin, and a statue of HDT himself.
The cabin is smaller than I expected. It's about the size of my bedroom, possibly even smaller. There's a bed, a small desk, and a fireplace with a small wood stove in it.
Perhaps it was the inspiration for the current Tiny House movement?
I didn't see much wildlife, but there was a little group of cheerful chickadees, and one of them sat still just long enough for me to capture his portrait.
Just like at his gravesite, but in much greater numbers, people left rocks with writing on them, mostly with quotes from Thoreau on them.
There was a rather large pile of them in addition to the ones left on the stones marking out the original cabin parameters. I wished I had a pen on me.
Still, even with all the tourists, it was a nice place to go to contemplate the end of the season, and bid the land good-night for the winter.
