The fireworks at Stanley Park were excellent! They went for a long time, and were very loud. The really loud ones were popular with the crowd, which was quite loud itself. Noisiest crowd I've ever heard at such an event. I had to strain to hear the music over them at times.
The Springfield Symphony was set up in a big, blue shell at the back of the field. When I got there, they were playing a medley of John Williams tunes, including, of course, Superman. The first one I heard as I arrived was Star Wars. They also played some George M. Cohan, the 1812 Overture, and, of course, the Stars & Stripes Forever.
There were tons of people there. It was kind of cool to see the streams of people walking up my street toward the park. Unfortunately, I wore the wrong shoes and got a blister. I took them off eventually and walked the rest of the way barefoot.
I found a nice spot near the herb garden, with a good view of the shell and fireworks. I had doused myself with bug spray before leaving, so the little biters left me alone. During the 1812, there was one flash of lighting, which elicited an "ooh" from the crowd. Then it started raining, a little at first, and then a little harder. Oh, well. About halfway through the show, it stopped, and the moon came out. Ooh! She was just to the left of the bursting display. That was cool.
After the excellent finale, with lots of booms and bursts, I headed out into the moving sea of people. A lot of them were walking right in the road, which I thought was rather silly, and inconsiderate of the people in cars, who had to wait. I was listening for the "moos" and "baas". All I got was a couple of cranky kids whining.
It was a lovely night for a walk, too. I heard from a few folks that the crowd was larger than in past years, and I believe it. It seemed like half the population of Westfield was there. I'm really glad I went! I love fireworks. :)
