A very apt article. I love teaching but the ONLY things I dislike about it (aside from the usual administrative crap) is that so many students these days are underchieving, narcissistic little whiners. Many of them think they have nothing to learn, that their work is perfect and has no need of improvement and that they will all achieve whatever they want in life. Boy are they in for a rude awakening.
Are their parents to blame? How did this happen?
In particular I agree with the portion that says such students lack empathy, are extremely defensive in the face of criticism and favor self-promotion over helping others. I had a student last semester who completely embodied this and is now complaining about getting a C (which he deserved). Back when I was in school, you didn't complain that a grade wa somehow unfounded; you worked to get better ones because you knew it was your responsibility.
What will these kids do when they have positions of authority in the future? Blame all their mistakes on everyone else?
