I've been reading all over the place (and all over my f-list) about the passing of Kurt Vonnegut. His was a unique voice, which will be greatly missed.

I had two near brushes with him: in my first year of college, he was supposed to come give a talk about Slaughterhouse Five, but he got sick and cancelled. They showed the movie and talked about him, and it, anyway. My mom went with me, because she was a big fan. The professor who spoke said that Vonnegut was terribly afraid of death.

The second instance was actually with his son, Mark, who was the pediatrician for the kids I used to be a nanny for. I spoke with him on the phone a couple of times, and he was a funny guy. I just thought it was neat that Kurt Vonnegut's son was a pediatrician. Six degrees and all that. :)

Mark Vonnegut is also the author of The Eden Express one of the best books on scziophrenia(sp?) I have ever read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eden_Express

In addition to being hillarious in places, it is a very accurate deptiction of what the disease seemed like to me when I was working at a mental hospital in New Mexico.
