For once, an accent meme that gets it right:

What American accent do you have?

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less.

Different
Same
Same, no wait I mean different, maybe, a little bit different...

(considering the first time I ever SAW the city was in my late thirties, that's quite a coup...)

Well, considering that [livejournal.com profile] mevennen is English and she got New York too, I'd say there's a bit of a flaw in the test. *g*

Ditto on a bit of a flaw. You know I'm from the Midwest and most Northerners I know from other parts can certainly tell!

You really don't have much of a midwest accent. I couldn't tell before you told me.

A noncommittal "Midlands" was the closest it could come with me - the poor thing couldn't make heads or tails of my Tennessee/Minnesota/New England mashup.
