My grandmother was born 97 years ago today. She came to America, pregnant with her third child, in the early '30s. She had 13 children, 12 of whom lived to adulthood, and most of whom had children, hence my many cousins (my cousin Cheryl uploaded this pic of her).
I remember her garden on the farm, which was huge (in my child's eyes). She had the cutest giggle. I never believed my mom's stories about her strictness (nor that of my grandfather) because she was so sweet and mild. She was a great cook; to this day, I remember the tastes of her potato salad and linzer torte.
Her name was Hedwig, like my mom, and like Harry Potter's owl.
Happy birthday, Grandma!
