elusive creatures

A couple of people have spotted mountain lions in the Berkshires (not so very far from where I live!), but the authorities are highly doubtful. WTF? It's not like they're reporting a bigfoot sighting. There have been plenty of sightings next door in Vermont. I don't know about you, but I would have no trouble distinguishing a mountain lion from a bobcat.
Speaking of bigfoot, did you know that there's a press conference today to unveil the body of a bigfoot found in Georgia? (As of this time, the website is down, most likely because the press conference is going on at this very moment) Our editor Mike has the press release on his blog (and he chastises me for bursting his bubble by sending him the link to the Museum of Hoaxes site debunking it, but then he promised me shotgun in the van ;)). He's a big cryptozoology buff (you *know* Monster Quest is required watching in his house), so he was all excited by the press release.
Wouldn't it be cool if they really found one?

Date: 2008-08-16 10:18 am (UTC)Over here in England there are regular reports of 'Alien Big Cats' ('Alien' in the sense of 'they don't belong here', rather than 'from another world') in our moorlands and hillsides, and to be honest there's no reason why there shouldn't be.
A couple of decades ago, a law was passed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Big_Cats#Escaped_or_released_animals_that_have_gone_feral), restricting the ownership of wild animals (including things like pumas and leopards). As a result, some large country estates released their 'big cats' into the surrounding countryside. It's not unreasonable to believe they could have survived, and possibly bred. [note that it says in the wikipedia article that most reports are the cats are 'black' - i'd say from a distance, any dark, fastmoving creature could be seen to be black!]
Bigfoot, heh that's a whole different kettle of fish. Though eminently more likely than the Loch Ness Monster ...

Date: 2008-08-16 11:15 am (UTC)We have our own lake monster here - Champ, in Lake Champlain. When I was little, we lived near the lake, but even though we took the ferry to Vermont, we never saw Champ.

Date: 2008-08-16 07:16 pm (UTC)i've come across champ before, but had to look it up to be reminded of it. definitely similar to nessie - big, deep lake that no-one's really explored the fully depths.
crytozoology amuses me. :)
