hand on heart

I got a note today about this photo, which I took at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown, MA. It's from a Dutch film company, wanting to use it in a production.

I took a lot of photos that day, and this one never really stood out in my mind as one of the better ones. Funny that it should be one that gets attention! But then, I never can guess which ones do. Some that I love get none, and then this little gem gets picked for international stardom. *g*

So, what do y'all think? Should I let them use it? I won't ask for any money, just a credit in the film. I kind of think it would be cool, but I wanted to get some feedback before I went for it. Thanks!

I'd say go ahead and let them use it.

Hey, if I were you, I'd ask for a small fee as well. Not alot, I'm sure you could use $200 or so.

Well, she said they were a low-budget production, so I'd rather get the exposure than get turned down. But yeah, extra money would be a nice thing. :)

Some pictures are iconic, and speak to people. (With some, you don't know who they're gonna speak to, but they do...)

I'd say yes, let them use the photo, and maybe your name listed in the credits will lead to more people wanting your work. Yay!

Do it AND ask for money!

Why the heck shouldn't you get paid? They're using your art for a profit-making venture.

Also, I have never once had a gratis photo I've provided lead to more work or recognition for me.

Here is my take on this, and I know it's going to come across as sounding angry but I'm not: Artists are not charitable institutions, unless they specifically want to provide art to something in lieu of a donation. Any production or publication can claim that they have a low budget, but they're responsible for buying what they need to create their production. You don't go into a store, pick up a $80 shirt, and expect that they'll give it to you for free because you have a "small budget," right? I also think that when we as artists give our work away or below market rate, it helps support the dynamic of artists not being paid for their work.

End of lecture. Do, of course, whatever makes you happiest.

I understand where you're coming from, and I have no intention of regularly giving away my work for free. I'm very new at this. ;)
