There was a cool article on boston.com today about a woman who accidentally found a 'lost' crypt in the Granary burying ground in Boston. What I liked most about it was this quote:

"You look at these tombstones, and each tombstone represents an individual life, existence, a career, a family history," said Ewers, a film editor for documentarian Ken Burns who tried to visit the site yesterday. "For me, graveyards are like a thousand untold stories."

That's one of the reasons I like to wander around cemeteries, especially old ones. It must be the storyteller in me. :)

I used to work about a block and a half from the Granary, and I would sometimes wander over that way on my lunch break. It's amazing that it's still there, surrounded by tall buildings on three sides.

Speaking of history, how cool is it that today is the 200th birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin? What stars aligned in the skies that day so that two such intelligent, great, and controversial men were born? Other interesting people born that year include Louis Braille (inventor of the reading system for the blind), and of course Edgar Allan Poe. 'Twas a good year.

That was interesting! Of course, I had to wonder why that one was covered up (did they explain that? if so, I missed it). BTW, if you ever stay over in warmer weather and have a little morning time, there's an old cemetery in Medfield that has a great deal of story appeal, a few mysteries even. :-)

I think it said that the stone covering it got covered over with dirt, then broke.

Ooh, I'd love to explore that cemetery! There's one in Medfield I'd like to check out, too. Perhaps this spring we'll have to do a cemetery tour. :)
