Do you think Heath Ledger would have won if he hadn't died? Not to be disrespectful or anything, but I don't think so. Still, it was a touching moment for his family.
I think he deserved an Oscar for his body of work. This was the Acadamy's last chance to give it to him. There may have been other Oscar worthy performances this year, but that doesn't matter. Ledger's performance in an unworthy movie really WAS Oscar worthy. The performance might have been overlooked because movies like Batman are usually overlooked. Ledger's death gave him the boost to lift him out of the comic book genre. Still, he really deserved win on his own merits as an actor.
I think that an acting performance that deserved the award would have been overlooked, simply because it was in a "comic book movie." I think his work as the Joker is deserving in its own right, though.
It was a great performance (it probably killed him, in part; his work on the role caused insomnia for which he took the Ambien that probably did him in); but since he won so recently, then no, maybe he would not have won. Then again, Sean Penn won for the third time in five years. He's older though.
I'm glad he won; my first choice after him was Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road.
