baby snapper, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

As I was leaving work, I noticed what looked like a clod of dirt at the edge of the parking lot. I suspected it might be one of the baby snapping turtles, and I was right! Omigosh, he is adorable!

You can see how small he is compared to the grass. That's just regular, lawn grass. After I took a few pix, I moved him into the taller grass so he wouldn't be grabbed by a predator. I was not wearing the appropriate footwear to tromp through the woods to the stream. I'm sure he'll find his way just fine. :)

They're not so cute when they get big, but their babies are adorable. :)

No, they're not. And their bite is awful!

He really is cute! Nothing in present-day New England looks more like a dinosaur than a snapping turtle.

OMGWTFBBQ! How utterly adorable :). Thank you for sharing, as I have a soft spot for the li'l guys and I needed a boost. I used to have a pet snapping turtle named Leonard. My family nursed him back to health after rescuing him from the middle of the road, and we eventually released him in the Greylock Glen.

My dad was always rescuing turtles (though usually not of the snapping variety) from roads. :)

Wow, it is a cute little critter.

This summer I was kayaking and saw a snapping turtle two feet long swimming below me...

I take it they don't SNAP at that age??

Or do you just have to keep your fingers well away from their mouths??

He was just hatched, so I think he was just scared of me. I picked him up on the sides of his shell, just in case. ;)
