Annie Sullivan memorial
Mar. 28th, 2011 08:54 pmI drive by this little park in Feeding Hills every day, and today I remembered to stop and take a picture of this statue. It's a memorial to Annie Sullivan, who was born in Feeding Hills, of the moment when she teaches Helen Keller the sign for "water."
When I was a kid, I had a book about Helen Keller, and it really stuck with me. I remember passages from it vividly, and it's been probably 35 years since I read it, at least. I admired Helen for what she overcame after her somewhat wild childhood, and her hunger for learning. I admired Annie for her persistence, in not letting that child remain in the dark, both literally and figuratively. That one stroke of understanding, when Helen finally understood what Annie was trying to communicate, sent chills down my spine. Still does, really.

I have always loved this statue. I love even more, that it is not facing the road.
Thank you for the picture, and for your story!
