cool moth, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

It's getting hot again. It's supposed to be near 100 on Thursday. I don't enjoy the heat. :P

What I thought at first was a leaf turned out to be this really nifty moth. Check out the crazy antennae, fuzzy body, and googly eyes:

hold on

It was on the fence outside an elementary school. Part of me wanted to bring out the kids to see it. Another, more sensible part thought that would probably not be a good idea. I could just picture the little tykes poking the poor creature. ;)

Wow! He's big. I didn't think he was real at first. Nature is so cool.

He's really big. Probably the biggest moth other than a luna that I've ever seen.

Royal Io I think, definetly one of the silkworm moths. I maybe wrong, but I think that is one of the American varieties, they make pretty silk, I have a friend who raises silk worms, he might be able to define it down to species.

Io or polyphemus, I think. It's one of the giant silk moths, in any case. (See http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef008.asp ). Wonderful find!

Looks like the heat's too much for the moth, too!

A marvellous creature...

I don't know why he was clinging to the fence like that! Perhaps you're right. ;)

Such a cool critter. :)
