I called the courthouse today, and I do have to go to jury duty tomorrow. It's not so much that I mind serving, but it's going to be a gorgeous day tomorrow, and if I have to spend all of it in the courthouse I will not be a happy kitty.

My best hope is that it turns out as it usually does, and I get to leave at lunchtime. Then I can walk around downtown Springfield and take pictures. In all the years I've lived here, I've never really explored downtown.

I had another good sales day today, despite the fact that I was alone all day and couldn't make as many calls as I'd have liked.

I wrote another piece at lunchtime that needs to be inserted somewhere in the story. It doesn't really move the story along, and may not make the final cut, but I like it. There are cupcakes involved. *g*

We didn't get any snow from that Nor'easter yesterday, but the rain did turn to ice overnight. My car door was frozen shut (a good body slam fixed that), and the radio had reports of accidents all over the place. On the short stretch of highway that I take in the morning, there were two accidents (one right near your exit, [livejournal.com profile] anaquana), and the cops were driving slowly with their lights on to slow down traffic. It was the bridges where both accidents occurred.

At least the sun was out all day, and it turned out to be pretty nice by midafternoon. Tomorrow promises to be more seasonal.

I wrote some more on my lunch break, and got it all typed in later. I have the makings of a first chapter now. Woot! Yeah, I'm slow, but I'm making progress. I'm getting better at quieting the storm in my mind and just writing. Stress has taken its toll, but I'm starting to tame it. For short stretches, at least.

I had a poem start to take shape on the ride home, and I managed to scribble down the imagery at a red light. I shouldn't let it simmer too long, though, or I will lose it.

Yeah. Going to go write that now, I think.

Monday is Columbus day, and is one of the (very) few holidays they actually give us. Tuesday is my furlough day. I decided to take a few of the many personal time hours they owe me tomorrow, so I have a five-day weekend! Wow, five whole days away from work. That'll be refreshing.

I plan to sleep, write, clean, and enjoy the foliage. Expect pictures. *g*

I also plan on playing with the video feature of the new iPod, but I won't be able to upload any movies until next Wednesday. This computer is just too old to be able to update the software. It's a dinosaur. *g*

Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, so I think it's going to be Catch Up On Sleep day. Hopefully.

I've been writing a couple of pages a day at lunch, so I'll type that in and see where I am. The story is starting to take shape. October is the perfect month to write a ghost story. :)

If any of you who will be in the area this weekend want to do a walk at the park on Monday, let me know! I'll be up for it, I'm sure. It's pretty much on your way home. :)

I had a nice surprise in the mail today when I got home: I got the check for that photo I sold (to review: a reader wanted to buy a photo I entered in the RAW July contest on boston.com). She wanted a framed, matted 11x14 print, so I researched how much it would be to have it printed (a whopping $2.10 at Staples) and framed/matted (about $15-20 at Michael's), and asked for $75. I have been blessed by generous customers: she sent me a check for $100, saying that she's an artist too (she makes jewelry) and that sometimes we don't value our work the way we should. What a sweetie. She also said she was sorry my photo didn't make the final three in the contest, but encouraged me to keep entering. I love this woman!

(BTW, I entered the August competition too, with a photo I took at the wedding, of the pyramid - the theme is Architecture)

What is especially nice about this is that I'm feeling pretty poor this week, to the point where I was crossing my fingers that I wouldn't need gas before payday. I think I might now be able to afford going to the movies or something this weekend! *g*

The pic above is one I took yesterday at sundown. Isn't it a gorgeous color?

On the writing front, I spent my lunch hour mapping out the characters I have so far. Walking through the cemetery this evening, I grabbed a few last names from gravestones for some of them. I'm getting a few ideas about plotting while I get the characters' voices, and I even know exactly how most of them look. I now have to weave the bits of story that I have into a coherent narrative. I have most of the bits, I just need to make them into something that makes sense! *g*

Today was a perfect weather day: sunny, low humidity, mid 70's. If I have to take a day off, I don't mind so much when it's a day like today.

I decided to kill two birds with one stone, and went down to Amelia Park, which is right across from Rite-Aid (where I needed to pick up a couple of things). There were lots of flowers, including tons of sunflowers. It's a pretty little park. Check out the post I just made on my photo blog for more floral goodness.

Hopefully this weekend will be nice, too. A three-dayer! And so far, no plans. I hope to keep it that way. I need a weekend to myself; it's been a busy summer. I have a series of stories that are threatening to become a book. I just need to figure out how to tie them all together into something other than a series of stories. Wish me luck!

I made it out twice today: first, down to the library, and later, over to Grandmothers' Garden. It was breezy and cold, but sunny, and it felt good to get out.

Oh! And I saw what appeared to be the tips of daffodils poking out of the ground at the front of my building! That was cheering. Made up for the ice on parts of the sidewalk.

I've been doing a lot of writing this week, mostly in short bursts like character sketches, and scenes for ideas that have been brewing. It feels good to stretch those muscles, too. :)

I just took the mail out, and man, is it hot! Weatherbug says it's 95 degrees, but it feels hotter. As soon as I went out the door, it hit me like a wall. Then I got to the blacktop of the parking lot, and it got even worse. It was exactly like opening the oven door, except there was no yummy food.

Fortunately, it's supposed to break tonight. We should have some spectacular thunderstorms this evening! There is, I hear, a tornado warning in the Berkshires.

Just the right weather, I think, for reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Since I've been moved lately to write ghost stories, I thought I'd read a classic in the genre that I hadn't gotten around to reading yet.

You know, I have never considered myself much of a horror fan, and I never thought I'd be writing it myself, but for some reason this is what I've been drawn to lately. It must be all those ghost stories I read as a kid, percolating away in my subconscious. Or perhaps it's just all the stress. *g*

It's a lovely, bright, sunny day out there today, very unlike the day 21 years ago when I moved to Massachusetts. It was snowing then, from the coast all the way to northern NY, from where I was driving. It's not very warm though, so I will get bundled up before I head outside to roam in the woods.

I've been doing a lot of thinking on and exploring of this new character of mine, immersing myself in her world. Is there such a thing as Method Writing, akin to Method Acting? If so, then I suppose that is what I am doing. Perhaps it is a remnant of my years in the theatre. Not that I was ever a Method actor... I was more of a spur-of-the-moment actor. Or perhaps an in-the-moment one. Kind of like jumping in the deep end of the pool, getting wet all at once. Splash!

Have a wonderful Sunday! There will most likely be pictures later.  :)

Neil Gaiman has interesting things to say about the whole JK Rowling - Dumbledore thang. He's got a good point. The reader doesn't need to know every little thing about every character, especially if it has nothing to do with the story.

Well, I wasn't the top salesperson in the company last week (but I was in my division!), but I'm already $6K over my quota for the month. With two weeks left to go. Go me!

I've got the April Showers Blahs. I need sunshine! Blue skies! Soft breezes! I feel soggy and lethargic.

I had a perfect story opening pop into my head last night as I was washing the dishes. Alas, I haven't gotten further than the third sentence. Gotta work on that some more this evening.

As usual, my Friday afternoon is all about the wait. Actually, a new customer came in and bought a four-color ad, so it wasn't all bad. Go me.

I wonder how those people who have the mega-bass in their cars don't have constant headaches. I get one just from them driving by. Which makes me roll my eyes, which is, I think, the intended effect. I think I must be getting old.

I finally remembered to buy wrapping paper today. It takes about four trips to the drugstore to get all the things I need, because I forget at least one thing on each trip. I'll get home, go to brush my teeth or something, and say "D'oh!" At least I come by it honestly; my mother is as forgetful (if not more) than I, and has a name for it: CRS (can't remember sh*t).

I've been reading David Sedaris lately, and I find myself searching my childhood for funny stories about which I could write. I don't think I have anything in my past remotely as bizarre as some of his stories, though. I know he elaborates somewhat, but my family is quite vanilla next to his. Our dysfunctions were less exotic, I guess.
