lizziebelle: (little me)

dolled up, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I went up to Brattleboro, Vermont yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] sea_dark_wine and [livejournal.com profile] justjanus for the Strolling of the Heifers parade. The rain cleared up just in time, and it turned out to be a beautiful day.

But there weren't any heifers in the actual parade! There was one very stubborn gal at the beginning, but she wouldn't cooperate so she dropped out. We had to wander around the town common for a bit before we found any. This one looked very pretty in her flower garland, but she was pretty unhappy about being tied up and gawked at.

There was a really big crowd in town for the festivities. It was good to see that; the town suffered a lot of flood damage during ex-hurricane Irene a couple years ago. It's a nice town.

We had lunch at a funky restaurant, where the food was really good but took forever to arrive.

On the walk back up to the car, we wandered around a cool old cemetery, reading the interesting epitaphs and looking at the nifty carvings. There were some awesome names in the 18th & 19th centuries! A little secret of mine: I get ideas for character names from old cemeteries.

It's very grey, rainy, and blah outside today, and I'd much rather be out with my camera, taking pictures of pretty things. I keep thinking that some of the roses down at Stanley Park must be in bloom by now, and how pretty they'd be with raindrops on them. If the sun were shining, that is.

I went to Trader Joe's this morning, and got some fun stuff including dark chocolate covered figs, called Figments. I love that place! The traffic on route 9 was awful though, because they're widening the street and part of it is gravel. I went to TJ's website and suggested that they open a store in Enfield, which would be closer and they could sell wine & beer. The one in Hadley doesn't, because of this Puritan state and its antiquated alcohol laws. We may be the bluest blue state, but in some things we are totally backwards.

OMG, these Figments are delish! Mustn't eat too many, though, or I will be very sorry later.

So anyway, here are some non-parade pix from Brattleboro yesterday, when the sun was shining:

Brattleboro is a lovely town, with lots of big old houses and neat little shops & restaurants. I'll have to go back someday and do some more exploring!

Jeez louise, it's getting even darker out. :P
