I went for a walk at the Lime Kiln & Quarry in Bolton last Sunday. The trees are almost all bare now, and the paths are covered in a thick layer of leaves, which made the going difficult. Must remember next year to go before the leaves fall. I almost turned my ankle several times stepping on rocks hidden by them.

I did see a family of deer way out in the woods; a doe, yearling, and buck ran by, doubtless startled by me crunching across the crispy carpet of oak and maple.

When I got back to the car, I discovered that my only car key had gotten bent somehow. Just a little, but enough to make it difficult to get it into and out of the door and ignition. I left it unlocked until I could get a replacement. I had a key made at Lowe's, but it didn't work. Fortunately, there's a Hyundai dealership across the street from my office. They put my VIN into the computer and made a brand-new key. Cost me 37 bucks, but it's a whole lot better than the key I had, which wasn't the original.

The problem with the MacBook turned out to be the hard drive. I had to have it replaced. Which meant I lost everything. Fortunately, all my photos are backed up on Flickr; that loss would have been devastating. But my iTunes (a lot of which was borrowed from friends or the library), various apps, and random stuff is all gone. Starting from scratch. Again. That's becoming a recurring theme in my life, and I don't especially like it.

I've been trying to keep up with NaNoWriMo, but most days I've only been able to pound out a few hundred words. Still, I'm writing almost every day, even if it's not a whole lot. I hosted write-ins at the library on Monday night and this morning, and people actually showed up. Today I got in 1,660 words, and a whole new scene.

I'd planned to write last night, but then I heard about Paris, and I just couldn't. I was heartbroken and horrified. Paris is number one on my bucket list. I've wanted to go there since I knew what Paris was. I'm pretty sure I lived there in a previous life, the draw is so strong. Someday, I will. My heart aches for her people today. I cannot comprehend such hatred and disregard for human life.

It makes my problems seem pretty small indeed.

It's been a fairly stressful week. My mom was in the hospital; she had what they called an "asthma event," but she's home now and doing much better. Apparently this lit a fire under the senior housing folks to find her a ground-floor unit and a better parking space; she has to move in two weeks, but that is less stressful for her than facing winter in the unit she's in now, where she has to climb either a hill or stairs to get out. She's having the movers do all the packing this time. She has a visiting nurse twice a week, and they're going to see if they can get her housekeeping help as well. It was tough to go through, but some good things came out of it.

I had a day of discomfort when my digestive system rebelled and gave me a rumbly tummy. It was a gorgeous day, and I could't get out and enjoy it. I did sit out on the deck for a while, but I would rather have been able to go out for a walk. *sigh*

Then my MacBook decided to go all wonky on me. I got the spinning ball of death, and when I tried to reboot, it wouldn't. It would get partway, and then just go black. I talked to a nice fella at Apple, who had me try a couple of things, which didn't work, so he made an appointment for me at the Apple store for Tuesday, the first available slot. I was able to get onto Guest mode, which is internet-only (and Safari to boot, not my favorite), so I can get email and a few other things, but none of my programs, including my photos. Argh. Cross your fingers it's just a software glitch or something, because there's no way I can afford a new computer right now. I don't know what I'll do if she's unfixable.

All of which has left me woefully behind in NaNoWriMo. I've been able to access Google Drive, so I can at least pound out some words and not lose them, but my mind has been elsewhere. I'm not going to fret about it (too much). I can only do what I can do.

At least I had a good week at work, despite missing a day. And it was nice enough all week to sit outside for lunch.

grrr, argh

I'm having technology troubles again. My email program is letting me read my messages, but not send them. I can't even check them online, but only from home. At work, it's fine. If you have something you need a reply for, please email me at the same name at gmail dot com.

The software that came with my camera is all wonky. It keeps quitting on me, and not saving edits. I can't seem to download the update. 'Tis frustrating.

What I really need is a new computer. Bleah.

I made a yummy pizza for dinner: I had gotten some whole-wheat pizza dough at Trader Joe's, and I put goat cheese, broccoli, spinach, and an Italian cheese blend on top. Mmmmmm.

I'm giving up and going to bed now.
