The weather has continued to be lovely, which is making me happy. After the winter we had, we deserve a nice spring.

I went over to Danforth Falls today for some woods & water therapy. The water is still quite high from all the snowmelt, and the falls were very energetic.

I walked all the way up to the pond, which is the source of the stream, and surprised a snake, which slid into the water at my approach. But then he slid onto a downed tree limb, and I got several nice pictures of him. I looked him up when I got home, and found out he was a Northern water snake. He was about a foot long.

I don't remember seeing one of these before, so that was cool.

One of the things I love about this place is all the big boulders scattered around the stream. This one is really big, larger than a car:

It's been nice enough to sit out on the deck, which also makes me happy. In the nice weather, I have a whole extra room to enjoy. My apartment is so small, it's very nice to have the deck.

I must go down and rake out the garden this week. I'm waiting for the local nursery to open for the season so I can get some flowers for my window boxes. I'm so looking forward to flowers!

good week

It's been a good week. My friend Jay has been in town, and I've gotten to spend time with him and other friends. I had a spectacular week at work, with eight sales. I got to go home early on Friday, to start my long weekend early. Spring continues to plod forward, in fits and starts. I went to the wildlife refuge today, where the lady's slippers were in bloom all over the place. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes were also out in force, and they find me particularly tasty. Must remember to buy bug spray before going out there again!

A few violas have popped up in the garden, come back from last year, so I transplanted them to one of the window boxes on my deck. In the other one, I planted the basil and parsley my neighbor gave me. I think I'll just put flowers in the other pots; I haven't decided which ones I want yet.

I have one more day off to enjoy, and it promises to be a nice one. And of course, it's Towel Day today. I do miss the wit and wisdom of Douglas Adams.

Spring continues to unfold, albeit more slowly than usual. Trees are finally leafing out, new flowers appear, grass is finally green and lush. The weather continues to resist staying nice for long, but we do get periods of pleasant weather for a day or two at a time.

Yesterday started out rainy and miserable, but ended up being quite spectacular, which was fortunate as it was graduation day for my niece. I can't believe my little Willow is a college graduate! Today, she's off to Germany to perform with her choir. Quite the exciting weekend for her!

I had to miss Plantapalooza yesterday because of this, but [livejournal.com profile] firespirit1 procured some tomato plants for me, which I picked up at her house today. She also gave me some tarragon from her garden, and now both reside in pots on my deck. I shall have to learn to cook with tarragon now! I've never used it before, that I recall. People have been giving me suggestions on Facebook. What's you're favorite tarragon recipe?

As I was weeding the garden, my neighbor cut me some more lilacs to bring inside. They're so wonderful! A couple of violas popped up in the garden, which I transplanted into my window box. I also found a volunteer violet, and the lily of the valley is starting to bloom. My woodruff came back, and is flowering. This is why I love spring: flowers everywhere! And green, green where it was grey and brown. Life returns in abundance. Windows are open, chasing out the stuffiness of winter. It won't be long before it gets hot and sticky, so I am enjoying every second of spring.

I got back today from Sirius Rising festival, after a week in the woods with a few hundred of my closest friends. We had a good festival. It was very good to be there, and to get away; it's also good to be home, where I can sleep in my own bed and not on an air mattress in a tent. I must find a better option by next year. My back will thank me for it.

It was hot, but not as hot as it was here in Massachusetts, so I hear. Also, there's no air conditioning when you're camping. Well, unless you have a camper with it, but I don't. The only real relief was the pool, but that was short-lived. Still, it was good to have a pool there. I didn't even mind all the people playing volleyball with big inflatable balls.

I didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to, because it was just too darned hot to walk around much. I did manage to get a few nice shots, even some of people.

The highlight of the week was a visit from Margot Adler. If you're Pagan and/or a fan of NPR, you probably know who she is. She was there to give a workshop (on Vampires in literature!) and participate in a panel discussion on Paganism, and she stopped by our camp for a drink one afternoon. Here she is getting her pinky nail painted green by our resident goddess, Anomie:

Margot is really nice and down-to-earth, not at all a diva (unlike some other Big Name Pagans I could mention). We had a nice discussion about a variety of topics, and it sounds as if she likes Brushwood enough to come again another time. It is rather a magickal place. I was really happy to be able to tell her in person how much her book meant to me. Drawing Down the Moon is what set me on this path, oh so many years ago.

This was my 20th trip there! Hard to believe all that time has passed. No wonder it feels like home. I've spent 20 weeks there - that's nearly five months!

My plants seem to have survived my absence (although my garden is overrun with weeds). We enjoyed the fruits of my labor the other night, eating my first tomato!

Several of the jelly bean tomatoes were ripe when I got home, so I had them with supper. Yummy!

Early bedtime tonight, I think. And back to work tomorrow. Which is my one-year anniversary at my job!

hot anxiety

They gave us today off, for which I'm thankful. I needed a nice, long weekend. I have so much to do before camp! Laundry, packing, making sure everything is there and works.

It's been really hot. I've been hiding out in my apartment, not wanting to go out after late morning. I got all my errands done by 10 this morning, one good side-effect of being unable to sleep late. I even did some weeding in the garden, after which I was literally dripping.

Speaking of the garden, I think I've given up on ever having sunflowers. Those doggone woodchucks ate the rest of them, even after I deployed ammonia and mothballs. I wanted to cry when I found them all nibbled down to stubs the other evening. I'm tired of providing an all-you-can-eat buffet for varmints.

It's been a stressful week. Sales were not good in June, and money was getting tight. I wasn't sure I would have the money to go to camp. Turns out I can do it, but just barely, and I will be poor for much of the summer to make up for it unless I have fantastic sales for the rest of July.

Pretty much the whole department had a bad June, which made our monthly sales meeting uncomfortable. My personal meeting with my boss and supervisor went better than I expected, though. They told me I was a good employee, and they appreciated the fact that I stay out of the gossip machine and don't stir up trouble. That was nice to hear, and I told them I appreciated them noticing. My boss rocks.

I've also been dealing with digestive issues, which stir up more anxiety, which makes them worse, in a vicious circle. Today things are much better, which is a relief. Now, if only I could sleep!

The above pic is my friends' cat Izzie, who rolled over and yawned just as I aimed my phone at him through the screen door, making him look positively manic. Silly beast.

I'm glad June is over. It wasn't the best of months. Sales were really tough, money became suddenly tight, and the weather was either rainy or stinking hot. I'm ready for July. In two weeks, I will be at Brushwood for Sirius Rising festival, with my other family for a week of fun. I can't wait.

I'm still at war with the woodchucks, who insist on eating my sunflowers even after I sprayed them with critter repellent. I'm on to ammonia-soaked rags and mothballs now. We'll see if this works. I just want pretty flowers!

I do have plenty of baby tomatoes on all my plants. I just hope they don't all ripen while I'm away! Or, wither and die from heatstroke.

I took the above pic on a walk the other night, in between thunderstorms. The sky was so dramatic! And I didn't get rained on. :)

Today ended up being a beautiful day after all. I got to do some weeding in the garden, and I went for a walk along the river, where it is very green and lush. I guess all that rain was good for something! I also got my first mosquito bites of the season. Dratted things! We hates them, precious.

I had a nice visit with the family yesterday; it was good to see my brother and sis-in-law. We always have lots of laughs when we're all together. We shared stories until we ran out.

I finally finished potting all my plants today. Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes, and parsley. I foresee lots of taboule and caprese in my future. I should learn to make mozzarella. Blessed are the cheesemakers!

And of course, I haven't forgotten the reason we have this day off. Thinking of all those who gave their lives in service to this country, including my Uncle Bob. May the freedoms they fought for never be taken from us.

I went to Tower Hill Botanical Garden with friends today. What a neat place! Lots of wonderful flowers, trees, paths through the woods, gardens, and statuary. It was a nice day for it.

Afterward, we went to see the new Star Trek movie. It was as awesome as I was hoping it would be. As good as my favorite of the old crew movies. The new cast is spot on, Benedict Cumberbatch was of course wonderful, and the action was intense and exciting. Best movie I've seen in ages.

Yesterday, I went to a plant sale and got tomato plants, dill, parsley, and columbine. I planted more flower seeds & bulbs, and the stuff I planted before is coming up. I'm keeping ahead of the Japanese knotweed (not an easy chore!). Gardening makes me happy.

In the afternoon, I went to an author panel on ghosts at Annie's Book Stop in Worcester ([livejournal.com profile] p_m_cryan's store) featuring [livejournal.com profile] morvenwestfield, [livejournal.com profile] jenwrites, and Terri Bruce. It was a lively conversation, very enjoyable. I bought Terri's book, Hereafter, because it sounded really interesting. It's told from a ghost's point of view.

It was a fun weekend. :)

Today was just glorious: warm, sunny, a few puffy clouds, a slight breeze. Perfection. I planted some gladiola & lily of the valley bulbs this morning, as well as sunflower seeds along the border between my garden and my neighbor's. I still have lots of room for other things! Maybe some ornamentals. Steve, our handyman, helped me move some daffodils from behind the barn to the front of the garden. He also found some more tools, and a decent hose, in the barn.

After lunch, I went over to the wildlife refuge for a long walk in the woods. I heard singing frogs, and saw an owl. Green things are sprouting up all over. On the way back to the car, I even heard a few peepers.

I stopped at Target to get some potting soil, so I attached the window boxes to the railing on the deck and planted several of my herbs in them. I also potted the lavender plant I got at Trader Joe's, and put the woodruff in the ground near the daffodils.

Yay, garden!

gardening

Finally, it's really spring. I spent much of the day digging in the dirt; I went to a local flower supplier this morning and bought a flat of multi-colored violas, and planted them along the drive after digging out the evil weeds that had taken over there. It's that awful stuff that gets really tall, grows about a foot a day, and resembles bamboo. I am a bit sore this evening!

I have some bulbs and seeds to plant, and I need to get some soil to pot my herbs. Yay, gardening! It's been a really long time since I've been able to have one.

Next month I'll get some tomatoes at Plantapalooza in Grafton. Fresh, home-grown tomatoes! Is there anything better?
