calm before the storm

Another snowstorm is expected tonight, but that's OK, because I have nowhere I have to go. It was a gorgeous, sunny morning, but really cold, so I waited until early this afternoon to go out. That was my fearless act for today; if you saw the state of the sidewalks around here, you'd understand. All that slush from the other day is frozen solid.
I walked toward downtown, and crossed over to take this picture of the door on the Westfield Woman's Club. That's where the local theatre group puts on its shows.

I decided to walk down that street, and found this wreath hanging from an archway between two apartment buildings.

It's amazing the things you notice when you're walking that you never see when you're driving. For instance, I didn't realize until today that there's a Masonic lodge in Westfield! Six and a half years, and I'm still discovering things here. *g*
Walking back up the hill, I went into the war memorial park on Silver St. It has memorials for every war and conflict since Westfield's founding in the 1600's, including King Phillip's war. The snow and the light made conditions less than ideal for pictures, so I'll have to go back on a sunnier, greener day. It's a small park, ringed with well-trimmed shrubbery and stone markers; a very austere reminder of war's price in human terms.

Slipping and sliding all the way home, I found evidence of the passage of many feet frozen into the ice.

I'm glad I made it out, even if I had to bundle up to do so. Tomorrow I will likely have to dig out my car once again.
