flood damage

I went out into the woods this morning, where I found lots of fungi, and evidence of Irene's passage.
The bridge past the boardwalk was wrecked. I didn't dare try to cross it.
The boardwalk itself also suffered some damage.
The reeds were laid flat by rushing waters in a few places.
I did see what I think is a green heron.
I can't imagine what it must have looked like on Sunday. Even today, the water was as high as I've ever seen it.
This streambed is usually dry.
I couldn't get over to the path along the river at all. Every way over there was blocked by normally dry streambeds or wrecked bridges.
There was evidence of mud on the grass way over by the hawthorn tree, which is quite far from any stream. It must have been quite a flood.
I'm sad about the bridge. Last time it got wrecked by a flood, it took them two or three years to get it fixed.
Once the water goes down, I'll be able to get over to the river path again. Just not in the usual way.
