lizziebelle: (OMG ONOZ)

When I got to work this morning (after driving through slushy snow), my boss was warning people not to go into the building because she smelled gas. So I got out my camera and started taking pictures of the pretty snow.

Then she told everybody to move their cars to the parking lot next door, in case the fire trucks had to come. I took a right instead and went to Starbucks, because I had a gift card. When I got back, the guy from the gas company was here saying it was carbon monoxide from the heater on the dock, but it was safe to go in.

A few minutes later, everybody came bursting from the back with their coats, saying they smelled smoke and GET OUT NOW so I grabbed my coat and purse, and got the heck outta Dodge. I moved my car (again) and took more pictures.

It was kind of cool to be able to get up close to the fire engine.

We eventually got the all-clear, and were able to come back inside. There's no heat on the newer side of the building (my office is on the old side), and there's still a smell back there, but they tell us we're safe, and the fire trucks are gone. The heating guy is here now working on that.

Oh, and the snow is very pretty.

I don't think anybody's going to complain about being bored for quite a while. *g*

Ok, something's fishy because carbon monoxide has no odor. If the H&C guy is on it, though, it will get fixed.

That's what I thought too, but apparently it's all good now. We even have heat again. We'll see!

Oooh! Exciting! A bit of disruption can be quite entertaining, as long as it all turns out OK in the end and no one is hurt and no damage is done.

I see your fire trucks are yellow. Our fire engines (as we call them) are red.

They're different colors in different towns here. We have red ones in the town where I live. Supposedly the yellow is more visible.

Having excitement first thing in the morning does make the rest of the day rather dull and slow! ;)

A recent report talks about red coming back:

"basically suggested that the most important thing for drivers is to be able to recognize the vehicle for what it is, whether it be a post office vehicle, a school bus or a fire truck — it's about what people are accustomed to seeing," Chief Lewis said.

"Red is the most recognizable color for fire trucks in the United States."

I dunno -- usually what I notice first is the sound!

That doesn't make sense, and I'm glad more people came to check it out. Carbon monoxide doesn't smell like gas, and is not safe indoors. Hopefully they've fixed the real problem now!

They did. It was an electrical fire in the heater. We're still not sure why there was a smell of gas. It was all very strange.

The CO2 was in the warehouse, and we had the garage door open, which is why it was OK to be inside the building. So they said. Nobody passed out, so I guess all's well that ends well!

Glad you're safe.

Thanks! I don't think we were ever in much danger, but if not for my boss's nose, we would have been in the building when the fire started. The two were unrelated, but it was a freak coincidence.
