once more, with feeling

Winter doesn't officially begin for another couple of weeks, but it's already here. The trees are bare, the grass is turning brown, the dry reeds along the river whisper in their dry voices that it's fallow time. The days are short, and still getting shorter. Even the relatively mild days we've been having give way to long, frosty nights.

I'm thankful for nice days, especially on the weekend, when I can get outside and enjoy the woods and the river. Who knows how many days like this we will have before spring?

We had a little snow overnight, which turned to slush today when the temperature rose above freezing. And then it got foggy. After clearing off my deck, stairs, and car, I walked down to the park hoping to get some nice photos of the bridge in the fog. I'm happy that I succeeded. It's such a pretty little bridge, and it looked so lovely in the fog. So worth sloshing around in the slush, ducking under branches, and getting as close to the water as I dared.

It's been relatively mild all week, and yesterday was bright & sunny so I went for a nice long walk over at the Assabet Wildlife Refuge.

It was a perfect day for walking in the woods. This time I stuck to the forest trails, and found all sorts of interesting lichens, mosses, and fungi.

Into the woods... )
I'm kinda hoping this will be a mild winter. We had two nasty ones in a row; we're due for a good one.

snow!

I woke up to snow falling gently outside, frosting the world with fluffy white. It was the light, fluffy sort of snow, easily swept or brushed off, so I went out to capture it with my camera before it decided to melt or get all slushy.

along the river )

I am a river person; the first body of water I learned the name of was a river, and my mother likes to tell the story about how every body of water I saw, from pond to lake to stream, was a river. Well, I was two, what do you expect? *g*

I'm very happy to have a river practically in my backyard. Which looks like this, BTW:

I really like how this shot turned out. I was trying to take a picture through the window of the old meetinghouse at Stanley Park, and caught the reflection of the outside as well. Something I couldn't have done on purpose. *g*

It was a lovely, cool weekend. Perfect for walking in the park and the woods. The water is still pretty high; I still wasn't able to cross the usually dry streambeds to walk along the river - they still have raging streams running through them. That plus the bridge having been damaged by the storm means I can't get to the river path at all. I miss it.

I don't feel like this weekend was long enough to recover from my week. *sigh*

Perfect May day today: breezy, sunny, and warm, with flowers everywhere, like this pink dogwood.

I walked down to the river at the far end of town, and found the trail along the river.

That was a really, really long walk. It was the perfect day for it, though.

I went for a walk along the dike again today, and wandered off into the cornfield (where they had started harvesting) and into the woods along the river.

It definitely feels like December out there today. *brrr*

I did so much walking this weekend, I am stiff and sore. It was so worth it, though; what a gorgeous weekend! A real taste of spring. It felt so good to be outside without a coat, gloves, and hat. I was almost too warm in a sweatshirt jacket.

The river was much higher today than it was yesterday; must be all that melting snow & ice. rushing waters )

more treasures )

There was a huge mound of flowers in the cemetery, and I just couldn't resist. They were mostly white, and so pretty. There was some Russian candy placed next to them.

I came across a gravestone that made the writer in me cringe. It's wrong on so many levels!

Strunk & White are spinning in their graves )

I'm looking forward now to a hot shower, and the Oscars on the telly. I just hope I can stay awake for it!

Downriver from where I was yesterday, the Little River gathers at the mill and is partially frozen over where it ponds at the waterfall.

A couple of logs got stuck on the falls. The same thing happened last year, but they were dislodged when the river overflowed in the spring.

The sun actually came out for a few minutes this afternoon, after I got back, of course. Now, we wait for the snow they say is coming. Lots of it, they say. The sky grows dark, thick with clouds, and I wonder if I'll be getting out in the morning. In like a lion, indeed.

Here is the river you heard in my previous post. It's very high today, and will probably get higher from all the snowmelt from this warm weather we're having. Well, relatively warm! I've noticed quite a lot of melting just since this morning.

snow, trees, and fog )

The mist held on for much longer in the snowy woods.

nebulous

It was a magickal place, as always. :)
