Thankful

golden clouds over the atrium

Despite all the awful things going on in the world, I'm spending time this week practicing gratitude. It is, after all, the original meaning behind Thanksgiving.

I have a lot to be thankful for. I have an awesome new job, a roof over my head, enough to eat, a relatively comfortable existence. What I am most thankful for, though, is my network of friends and family (this includes all of you, BTW). Sometimes I am astonished at the love they show me. It gives me hope for humanity, which is sometimes hard to come by.

So I'm trying to not dwell on the things I wish I had, and be grateful for everything I do have.

There was some really excellent ice at the edges of the river yesterday. Very thin, very fragile, and lined like isobars on a map. Leaves and grasses added to the patterns, catching the late-day sun to sparkle in blue and silver.

Downriver, three swans glided by, glowing in the golden light.

I do miss the swans at Heritage Park, with all their antics, but at least I have these beauties to admire now and again, even if they're not as gregarious.

I've had a relaxing few days, with a lovely if small Thanksgiving with good friends and plenty of food. We got together again last night with a slightly different gang, for more food and drink and lots of laughs. I love my friends.

And I still have two days left to get stuff done. This is so much better than my days in retail, when this was the week we all dreaded! We called it "Black Friday" for very different reasons. *g*

winter geese, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I've spent most of the weekend indoors, as it's suddenly winter here. Today it didn't get much above 20 degrees, with a wicked wind that sounded very cold. I did get out for a bit yesterday, walking down to the river where the geese floated serenely, unaware of what was coming.

It actually snowed a little bit overnight, just a dusting which got mostly blown away during the day.

I spent much of yesterday parked in front of the telly, watching Doctor Who. I loved the 50th Anniversary special, which I won't spoil for those of you who haven't seen it yet. I was clapping and grinning from ear to ear at the end. I'm going to see it in 3D at the theatre tomorrow night with a couple of friends, and I can't wait to see their reactions!

It's going to be a short workweek; we have three days off for Thanksgiving, which will be nice. But the pressure will be on for Monday and Tuesday to make sales, because it'll be the end of the selling month for us. Cross your fingers for me! I need all the luck I can get.

This Thanksgiving, I have a lot to be thankful for. At the beginning of this year, I never envisioned myself saying that. It's been rough getting here, but I'm here, and life is starting to be good again. I really like my job and my apartment, I'm closer to my family and more of my friends, I'm healthy (except for this @#$&* cold that refuses to go away) (*sniff* *cough*), and even though my computer is old, it works, and I'm back online at home. Yes, life is pretty good. Hopefully, the bad stuff will stay in the past, and I can continue moving forward. I'm definitely counting my blessings today. And every day.

I'm also thankful for all of you, as absent as I've been lately. I'm trying to be more present, now that the basics have been taken care of. I'm looking forward to actually living, rather that just surviving.

What are you thankful for?

...and tomorrow, I get Internet at home, so I don't have to steal moments at work, or go to the library, to check my email. I've been listening to audiobooks (I scored the first five Harry Potter books on tape at a yard sale, for free) and watching DVDs (Firefly from my collection, and Buffy from the library). I will be glad to have TV and Internet again. I miss my shows, the few I've managed to keep up with. Especially Castle and Once Upon a Time.

Reason #547 that my job rocks: I have the next five days off. Three of them paid. Also, I am a rockstar there this week; I had two sales yesterday, and a two-fer today (two sales from one call - they had two shops, which did slightly different things, so they applied for both separately. And yes, they knew they would be paying for both, and it was even her idea). They had a contest for the week, which I won, and it was a ridiculously large box of chocolates, which I shared with the whole office, and there's still a bunch left. It's getting divvied out to friends and family over the weekend, because I do NOT want it in my house! You'd have to roll me down the stairs if I ate all that chocolate.

I have unpacked nearly all the boxes; the only ones left are ephemera that I haven't decided what to do with. Go me. It looks like an apartment and not a warehouse now. I do like it there, and I'm loving the five-minute commute. My co-workers are all jealous. I tell them I used to have a 23-mile commute, so this is my reward. I will be especially thankful when it snows.

I hope all of you who are celebrating have a lovely Thanksgiving. I'll be celebrating with friends, a small gathering this year. I'll go to mom's on Friday for leftovers. Gobble gobble!

Surprise!, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I am thankful for friends, especially those friends who made sure I had a nice Thanksgiving. <3

I'm thankful for cats, even those which reluctantly let me take their pictures so I can demonstrate Photoshop on my iPad.

I'm thankful for leftovers, especially pie, which I had for supper. Tomorrow, I will have a fabulous turkey sandwich for lunch. :9

I'm thankful for all of you. Happy Thanksgiving, even if it's not a holiday where you are. :)

Mercury goes retrograde in a couple of days, and it's already started.

I've been puttering around the house today: packing away summer clothing, doing laundry, sorting out piles of stuff that I had set aside to be dealt with later, etc. Somewhere in that whirlwind, I'd switched which pegs the keys were hung on, and when I went out to put in another load, I grabbed the car keys instead of the apartment keys. Whoops. I tossed the basket into the laundry room, and knocked on my neighbor's door to ask if he could call the landlord for me. Landlord wasn't there, but his partner was, and he promised to get him the message. Landlord called back, and we had a conversation that's been needed because he's been passive-aggressively avoiding me (leaving messages on the phone he knows I don't answer, saying he hasn't gotten my messages, etc.). I think things are straightened out, at least for now. While we were still talking, his son got there with the keys, and I got back into my apartment. So, all's well that ends well. Or whatever.

Thanks to my wonderful friends, I have somewhere to go for Thanksgiving, and a way to get there. J is coming to get me tomorrow, and S is bringing me home Thursday. Yay! A coworker had invited me over, but I'd much rather spend the day with friends who are like family. Have I mentioned lately how much I love my friends? Because I do. Lots. <3

Now I just have to deal with the piles of things I have sorted out. O_o

adoring, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I spent much of the afternoon with an adoring Amelia on my lap. She is such a sweetie!

I had a lovely afternoon with friends, although poor Cheryl was feeling poorly and couldn't join us.

I'm still stuffed full of turkey, trimmings, and pie. My fridge is full of leftovers.

I am thankful for good friends, good food, and traffic that moved along the whole way there and back.

Ooh, and [livejournal.com profile] ami_1 had a copy of my calendar! It's so purty! I must order one for myself.

my calendar!

In case I'm in too much of a turkey coma later to post, I wanted to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who are celebrating today. I'm thankful for friends, family, and all of you. <3

I'm off to [livejournal.com profile] ami_1's place to celebrate with her and some friends. Let's hope the traffic isn't too bad on the Pike!

Wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to all my American (and expat) friends, and a happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] textiletart and [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhobbit! To the rest of you, happy Thursday! *g*

I am thankful for friends and family who love me, despite my occasional crankiness. I'm thankful for the friends I've reconnected with this year, through Facebook and my high school reunion. I'm thankful for the dozens of cousins I've reconnected with, also through Facebook and reunions. Yes, I said dozens.

I'm thankful for my LJ friends, this wonderful community where we share each others' joys and sorrows.

I'm cracking up at the performers from Hair in the Macy's parade, none of whom can have been born any earlier than the 80's. OK, so I was a little kid in the 60's, but I remember when Hair came out. *g*

I'm thankful that I have a roof over my head and food in the cupboard. I have a car and a job. As much as I complain about things, I know that I am much more fortunate than millions of people in the world, who don't even have the basics.

I am thankful for this beautiful planet we live on, and all the bounty she provides us with.

Today, I will be celebrating with good friends who are like family, and for that I'm especially thankful.

Today, I am thinking of all the things I have to be thankful for instead of what I don't have. I have a roof over my head, food in the cupboard, clothes on my back, a job, and a lot of other things that millions of people in the world don't have.

I have a family that loves me and accepts me the way that I am, and friends who do the same. I have a wonderful community, both online and in person, that is supportive, creative, talented, and inspiring. Thank you for making it worth getting out of bed in the morning.

Now, I'm off to peel, slice & roast sweet potatoes, and share the day with good friends. Happy Thanksgiving!

I have Thanksgiving plans! I'm feeling much better about it now. I can spend a nice, quiet day with friends, and not have to worry about driving across the state or making small talk with people I barely know. Many hugs to [livejournal.com profile] ami_1 for volunteering.

I also took next Wednesday off, since I have all this time I have to use up before the end of the year, and I have to work that Friday. Perhaps I'll take the rest of it between Christmas and New Year's. I might have enough to take that whole week off. I've always wanted to be able to do that. *g*

We're getting free dinner here at the office today, because we worked our butts off and did a great job selling the Holiday Gift Guide. They're closing the office at 4:00, and Frigo's is bringing lots of yummy Italian food. Yay for free food!

Ooh, and they just got here with the food!

Here's a great idea: instead of "Black Friday," how about Buy Nothing Day? Rampant consumerism is the cause of a lot of ills (from the article: unrestrained consumption is a major contributor to environmental catastrophe), so why not reject the prevailing paradigm and spend the day (if you have it off) with your family instead?

I realize I am probably preaching to the choir here, but spread the word. It's not all about the stuff.

Oh, and happy turkey day to all my 'Merican friends. Gobble gobble! Safe travels, good food, family & friends, good health to you all. Actually, all of that to you non-'Mericans, too. :)
