frozen leaves, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

There was some really excellent ice at the edges of the river yesterday. Very thin, very fragile, and lined like isobars on a map. Leaves and grasses added to the patterns, catching the late-day sun to sparkle in blue and silver.

Downriver, three swans glided by, glowing in the golden light.

I do miss the swans at Heritage Park, with all their antics, but at least I have these beauties to admire now and again, even if they're not as gregarious.

I've had a relaxing few days, with a lovely if small Thanksgiving with good friends and plenty of food. We got together again last night with a slightly different gang, for more food and drink and lots of laughs. I love my friends.

And I still have two days left to get stuff done. This is so much better than my days in retail, when this was the week we all dreaded! We called it "Black Friday" for very different reasons. *g*

I went for a walk over by the river this afternoon, hoping to get some nice foliage pictures. I stopped at a favorite spot, and there was a whole family of swans just across the water from me!

I snapped a bunch of photos, and then I noticed a great blue heron a little farther down. Score! I usually scare him away. I took a short video of him stalking along the riverbank, and after much tinkering finally figured out how to upload the darn thing to YouTube.

You can hear a chipmunk yelling at me in the background. *g*

It turned out to be quite the lovely day, after a frost this morning. Yep, it's October all right.

My paid account here expires tomorrow, and I don't think I'll renew it. I have better things to spend my money on at the moment, like food and bills. I'll have to download all my icons so I don't lose them (again). It's not like I was really using all the features, anyway. I do hope I can figure out how to post from Flickr again, though, because that is just darned annoying.

egret, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

I was earlier than usual this morning (no traffic - yay!) so I stopped at the park to walk around in the morning sunshine. This egret was stalking frogs on the other side, so I crept as close as I could get and zoomed the camera as far as it would go. Not the best pictures, but I'm glad I got a few of him. He was lovely.

I went down to the park at lunch, and visited with my old friends the Prissy Swans. Mr. Prissy started to look all threatening when I walked over,

stay away from my woman

but then he seemed to say, "Oh, it's you," and proceeded to pose for me.

aren't I pretty?

He has really big feet.

Mrs. Prissy, on the other hand, just went back to her nap.

Mr. & Mrs. Prissy are nesting down at Heritage Park. They've done this for the past few years (see this entry for one past attempt) but have yet to produce any little Prissies.

After a savage display (see above mentioned entry) when I got near the nest in the past, I expected at least an acknowledgment that I was getting too close, but Mr. Prissy was off harassing the geese, who were just swimming around minding their own business.

I guess I'm not much of a threat. *g*

That crazy swan down at Heritage Park decided today that he needed to cross the street, which is a very busy main thoroughfare, at lunchtime. I was sitting there reading when I heard horns tooting, and turned around to see him standing in the middle of the road. Just standing there. One intrepid woman got out of her car and tried to shoo him, which he responded to by trying to bite her. He finally did make it across; I sure hope the grass at the bank was tasty! A guy came out of the bank, took a picture, then went back in. It was all very entertaining. (I didn't make it there with my camera in time to catch him in the street)

I took a picture of one of my favorite trees yesterday, and I realized that I had pictures of it from the spring and winter:

tree with staircase and rock pretty tree stairs, tree, rock

I'll have to go back and get it in the snow. :)

I went down to Heritage Park at lunch today, as usual, and noticed that the swans were nesting.

I decided to get a bit closer to see if I could get a good photo. Then the male swan started looking like he was going to charge me (and who could blame him? I could be raiding the nest for all he knows).cut for photos of male posturing and savage attacks )
