Last weekend was my family reunion. It's always good to see everyone, and this year we had quite a few of the cousins (my generation) attending so we managed to corral all of us and get some pictures.

image

There are (I think) 23 of us, so having 15 all in one place is pretty good.

Actually, one of the folks in the pic is a cousin from Germany, who was visiting with his daughter. So make that 14. Still a pretty good showing.

It was nice to meet Hannes, our German cousin. His mother and mine are first cousins. I'm not sure what that makes us; second cousins? I can never keep that straight.

Back at work on Monday, we had two days of sales meetings. Fortunately, my team didn't have to attend all the modules. It's hard for me to sit through long meetings. I need to get up and stretch, and walk around once in a while! We were supposed to all go to Dairy Queen again, but it was rather gloomy outside so they brought in ice cream & toppings, and we did make-your-own sundaes. That was fun. It was my birthday that day (Tuesday), and one of my coworkers spilled the beans so they all sang to me. That was fun, if slightly embarrassing.

After work, I met a friend at her now former house so she could give me an extra TV they had, since mine had bit the dust a while ago (all I've had to watch since then is a 13" old-fashioned tube set). Well, the darned thing is HUGE, and it was an effort for both of us to get it into the car. There it stayed until today, when my landlord dropped by (for another reason) and nicely helped me carry it upstairs, and waited while I cleared off the bookcase where we put it. Whew. I had to do some rearranging, but I think I've found a good arrangement.

I had to go to Target to pick up an HDMI cable, and after I attached all the cords I turned it on. Great picture, but no sound! That was frustrating. I called the electronics department at Target, but the guy there was little help. So I looked at the back of the cable box, and noticed there was an audio out jack (actually, a pair of them) which matched jacks on the TV. Aha! I think. So I went back to Target (it's only 5 minutes away) and bought an audio cable. It took a couple of tries in different jacks on the back of the TV (there are so many of them!), but now I have sound! And HD picture! And the thing really is huge, I think it's 40". So now I have a bigass television, and I'm watching the opening ceremonies from Rio on demand. Nice. I don't have a remote or a manual, but hey, it was free. I really can't complain.

An aside: why do the Olympic opening ceremonies have to be so weird? Who started that trend?

Last night, I got together with friends for a nice cookout-and-cocktails evening, complete with cupcakes for my birthday.

Untitled

My friends are awesome. But they made me take home the leftover cupcakes. I had one for breakfast, because I could.

Oh, and the other night we had a smoke alarm malfunction in the house. Fun times.

So it's been quite the week. I hope I have the spoons for tomorrow's Lammas Faire, which is here in Hudson now.

gratitude

I took today off as my birthday (it was Saturday) rather than Friday, thinking Monday would be slower at work, and it turned out to be a pretty nice day. I went over to Gates Pond for a walk, and found lots of dragonflies flitting about by the water. A couple of them even held still long enough for me to get a picture.

I've been seeing a few folks doing daily gratitude posts on Facebook, and thought my birthday month would be the perfect time to do that. I need to concentrate more on what I do have, rather than what I don't. From big to small, I'm giving thanks for all the good things in my life. It's something I need to remember, every day. I'll put the whole list up here at the end of the month. Here's an extra one for today, and just for my LJ buds: I'm thankful for all of you. You brighten up my day, every day.

nice day

My employer gives us a day off (paid, even) for our birthday, and as mine fell on a Friday, I was happy to have a long weekend. I didn't do a whole lot, spending most of the day just lounging around for a change. I even took a nap!

In the afternoon, I went over to Gates Pond, which is our town's water supply. It's surrounded by woods, and has a nice wide path all around it. It's about 2 miles around, and with the hills and little side paths, it's a fairly good workout. It was a beautiful day, too: not too hot, breezy, and quiet, as it was a weekday. Just perfect.

On the way back to the car, I noticed some of the scrub along the road was trampled down, and investigated. Turned out to be a patch of blackberries! Most of it had been picked over, but I found some ripe berries, along with some boysenberries, and had a birthday treat from Mother Nature. Yum!

Last night, a few of us got together over at my friends' place for cocktails and grilled chicken. Everyone brought stuff, and we had a lovely little feast. It was cool enough to sit out on the screened porch, and toward the end of the meal we were treated to a lightning show, though it didn't rain very much. L had gotten some cupcakes and other treats, and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to me. That was unexpected, and really nice. There was no place I would rather have been than with friends, sharing food and drink on a lovely summer evening. At this point in my life, I don't need a big fuss made over another birthday, but it's nice to be acknowledged. And another year is an achievement. ;)

I'm not sure how it happened, but I turned fifty today. I could swear I just turned thirty, but there you go. Twenty years just flew by.

Actually, I'm rather glad to be out of my forties. That was not my best decade, by a long shot. Well, it really was my worst decade. Glad I got that out of the way. Now I can move on, and be fabulously fifty.

Of course, it helps that I don't look my age, and lord knows I don't act it. But I think my generation is much younger than my parents' generation at the same age. I'd like to think we're redefining aging. Or refusing to grow up, take your pick. *g*

I had thought of doing a few things today, but it was hot, and I didn't. I did go for a walk, and I found a bridge over the pond behind Grandmothers' Garden, where I took the above picture. And there was exactly one ripe blackberry, so I ate it. It pays to look under the leaves. :)

I might go out for ice cream later; there's a nice little ice cream place about a half-mile walk from here. The kind of place that has a sliding window on the outside, and they hand you a pile of napkins with your cone. I can sit looking down into the valley, and think about having made it to fifty. :)

Lammas

Lammas bounty, originally uploaded by Lizzie~Belle.

It wasn't so much fun to have to work on my birthday, but at least it was busy. I had a warm glow all day from all the well-wishes on Facebook and LJ; social networking is fun! *g*

This handful of blackberries, a gift from the Earth, is now in my belly. I found them last week, when they were still ripening, and was hoping that the birds wouldn't beat me to them. Thanks, Mother Nature!

Another gift was the sunset.

In Nature's bounty, and in friends & family, I am truly rich.

Happy Lammas/ Lughnasadh!

quiet day

I drove home after the Lammas festival last night so that I could wake up in my own bed, and get outside before the rain started. It was grey and overcast, but I headed down to the woods anyway, where it was mostly quiet. The water wasn't as high as I expected, after all the rain we had this week, but it was rather brown.

There were lots and lots of fungi, but most of my pix didn't come out because it was so dark under the trees. There were some pretty purple mushrooms I would have liked to have gotten pictures of. I did get some of the traffic-cone orange ones, and a few others, but my camera doesn't like fungi very much. I'm not sure that it knows what to do with them. *g*

It started to sprinkle after a while, so I headed for home. It was just as well, since all this rain has produced a bumper crop of mosquitoes. Also gnats, which seem to have Kamikaze tendencies: one flew right into my eye! Stupid bug.

When it started to rain harder, I decided to lay down for a bit, and woke up about an hour and a half later. Oops! I guess I needed it.

I plan to make blueberry pancakes for supper, and watch disc 2 of Torchwood: Children of Earth. I hope it's as entertaining as disc 1 was. So far, it's rocked.

All in all, it's been a nice way to spend my birthday. Just as I'd planned. :)

People keep asking me what I plan to do for my birthday, and I tell them, "Absolutely nothing." I've spent the past three weekends travelling and surrounded by loads of people. I want a day just for myself.

I will go to the coven Lammas tomorrow night, because I haven't spent nearly enough time with those folks this year, but on Sunday, I want to be by myself, in the woods and/or the park. I don't want to have any demands on me. I want to be in nature, just me and my camera. Maybe make blueberry pancakes for supper. Take a nap if it rains. But no people! I love people (I *am* a Leo, after all), but I need my alone time, too. :)

We had a little party in the office this afternoon, for me and another gal whose birthday is next week, and two of the interns whose last day is today. I had chocolate cake. They used trick candles (the ones that relight after you blow them out). *g*

I got out of the house and down to the park this morning, which is a good thing because it's raining now. I feel badly for my coworker, whose daughter is getting married today and is scheduled to have her pictures done in said park. Maybe it'll stop raining before then. One can always hope.

I overheard a woman telling her two little kids that this was where she & daddy got married. Right here, she said, we promised to love each other and blah blah blah. The kids seemed disinterested; they wanted to see the dinosaur footprints! It was cute.

Mom called me first thing this morning to wish me a happy birthday. Tomorrow is hers, so I returned the favor. :)

I'll get to celebrate with the coven this evening at our Lammas festival. I think I'll make sun-dried tomato pesto with pasta for the feast. That sounds yummy, and I really should use that pesto.

I hope you're all having a fabulous weekend!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! I decided to take my b'day day off in a couple of weeks and have a long weekend, so I'm here at the salt mines today. Which is OK, it's kinda fun having everyone wish me a happy birthday. I am such a Leo. *g*

It looks like all my Minnesota friends & relatives are OK, which is a great relief. I spoke with [livejournal.com profile] daurdabla a few minutes ago (that's Rob B. for you folks who know him), and he's going to be here in MA very briefly in a couple of weeks. Yay! If I remind him how long we've known each other, we'll just both feel really old. *g*

So, yeah. I'm not dwelling on the number, but the whole of my life and the wonderful friends & community I have. Thanks, all, for being my friend. :)

ETA D'oh, and happy Lammas/ Lughnasadh to all my Pagan & Wiccan friends!
