It's been very hot and muggy in these parts the past few days. Too hot. I miss getting outside, and going walking. It reminds me of the awful cold days of winter, when I was similarly disinterested in going outside. I've been trapped inside all weekend, where I mercifully have air conditioning (I would never have made it if I didn't). The heat index has been hovering around 100*F (around 38*C), and the brief forays outside reinforced my decision to stay in. Oof.

I've been watching some of the Olympics coverage on my new telly, trying to catch different sports. Right now it's field hockey, where the 'field' is a puzzling shade of blue. Earlier it was table tennis, which was surprisingly intense. I'm thoroughly over beach volleyball, which seems a bit twee for an Olympic sport. I find most of the commentators irritating, especially when they get all excited and you can't understand a word they're saying.

I give props to all the athletes, though (even the beach volleyballers); they all worked hard to get there, and are amazing at what they do. I can't imagine the work and discipline it took.

Anyhoo, I sure do hope we get those thunderstorms they forecast for this evening. We so need the rain, and maybe they'll cool things off a little.

Last weekend was my family reunion. It's always good to see everyone, and this year we had quite a few of the cousins (my generation) attending so we managed to corral all of us and get some pictures.

image

There are (I think) 23 of us, so having 15 all in one place is pretty good.

Actually, one of the folks in the pic is a cousin from Germany, who was visiting with his daughter. So make that 14. Still a pretty good showing.

It was nice to meet Hannes, our German cousin. His mother and mine are first cousins. I'm not sure what that makes us; second cousins? I can never keep that straight.

Back at work on Monday, we had two days of sales meetings. Fortunately, my team didn't have to attend all the modules. It's hard for me to sit through long meetings. I need to get up and stretch, and walk around once in a while! We were supposed to all go to Dairy Queen again, but it was rather gloomy outside so they brought in ice cream & toppings, and we did make-your-own sundaes. That was fun. It was my birthday that day (Tuesday), and one of my coworkers spilled the beans so they all sang to me. That was fun, if slightly embarrassing.

After work, I met a friend at her now former house so she could give me an extra TV they had, since mine had bit the dust a while ago (all I've had to watch since then is a 13" old-fashioned tube set). Well, the darned thing is HUGE, and it was an effort for both of us to get it into the car. There it stayed until today, when my landlord dropped by (for another reason) and nicely helped me carry it upstairs, and waited while I cleared off the bookcase where we put it. Whew. I had to do some rearranging, but I think I've found a good arrangement.

I had to go to Target to pick up an HDMI cable, and after I attached all the cords I turned it on. Great picture, but no sound! That was frustrating. I called the electronics department at Target, but the guy there was little help. So I looked at the back of the cable box, and noticed there was an audio out jack (actually, a pair of them) which matched jacks on the TV. Aha! I think. So I went back to Target (it's only 5 minutes away) and bought an audio cable. It took a couple of tries in different jacks on the back of the TV (there are so many of them!), but now I have sound! And HD picture! And the thing really is huge, I think it's 40". So now I have a bigass television, and I'm watching the opening ceremonies from Rio on demand. Nice. I don't have a remote or a manual, but hey, it was free. I really can't complain.

An aside: why do the Olympic opening ceremonies have to be so weird? Who started that trend?

Last night, I got together with friends for a nice cookout-and-cocktails evening, complete with cupcakes for my birthday.

Untitled

My friends are awesome. But they made me take home the leftover cupcakes. I had one for breakfast, because I could.

Oh, and the other night we had a smoke alarm malfunction in the house. Fun times.

So it's been quite the week. I hope I have the spoons for tomorrow's Lammas Faire, which is here in Hudson now.

I went for a nice long walk today, all the way up to the sculptures on the bike trail. It was relatively mild, compared with what we've had lately. I didn't manage to make it out while the sun was still shining, but that's OK. It was a good walk.

I was listening to the audiobook of Casanova, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] grrlfriday. There was much giggling. And sighing. It's just perfect.

I've been watching some of the Olympics, but so far I haven't really been wowed by anything. Some of the commentators crack me up with their enthusiasm, and a lot of them really annoy me (especially when they criticize the athletes). I understand why some people are refusing to watch; I very much disagree with the policies of Russia, too. But for me it's about the athletes, not the politics or the sponsors. They all worked hard to get there, and I want to celebrate their victories and accomplishments with them. It's not their fault that the venue is in a questionable place.

Can you guess what I had for lunch? ;)

It's been a long afternoon. My coworker left at 1:00 to head to Florida, and she won't be back until next Thursday, so it's going to be a long few days. I hope to have a relaxing weekend; the plans I had for tomorrow have unexpectedly fallen through, and I feel OK about that. I have projects that have been neglected, and of course laundry to do. And Olympic sports to be watched.

I enjoy the winter games more than the summer ones. They're more exciting, more death-defying. More stylish. And, in the case of short-track speed skating, more dizzying.

I had a dream this morning that the (fictional) husband of my (fictional) friend, who was quite wealthy, was ordering me a new computer. I asked him if it could be a laptop. Wishful thinking, much? ;)

In addition to laundry and various projects, I hope to be able to get out and take some pictures this weekend. I need to think of a different place to go; perhaps I'll hit up that cemetery in West Springfield, if it's nice out. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] anaquana, are there any big cemeteries in Agawam?

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend? Have a good one!

I'm up to day 50 in my 365 project. Go me!

After a Lunch Fail (underdone noodles that then went cold when I helped a customer) (but it was a good sale to a new customer, so, yay), I walked down to the center of town in the wonderful 40 degree sunshine. It was a bit breezy, but it felt good. Most of Tuesday's snow has melted. I made up for my lack of a decent lunch with Mini Robin's Eggs from Walgreens. I wanted dark chocolate Cadbury Mini Eggs, but nobody seems to have them this year. Poo!

Something else that I can't find anywhere: elderberry jelly. Does nobody make that anymore? Not even the gourmet places have it. I want some!

I'm thinking of rewatching this week's LOST tonight instead of the Olympics. I don't really like the boys' figure skating. I know this is an unpopular stance, but I just can't get into it. Plus, LOST was fantastic this week! It deserves another look.

After a mostly cloudy morning, the sun finally came out, and I went for not one but two walks to enjoy it. And I'll probably go out again, because it's still sunny and nice.

I found this rose beside a fresh grave in the cemetery, and I love how the velvety petals almost glow.

I've been watching the Olympics on and off today, and I had to crack up at how excited the announcer for the cross-country race was. It's cross country, man! How exciting can that be? *g*

It's hard to believe that the weekend is nearly over already. Three days go by so quickly! Luckily, I have another three-day weekend coming up in just a week. Wahoo!

I got plenty of sleep, took a bunch of nice pictures, and did some reading for a review I must write, so I'd say it was a success. I even got some laundry done.

I'm finding that I'm not able to watch the closing ceremonies of the Olympics; all those people performing in total submission to the hive mind is really creepy. Also, I find Chinese music jarring. It's so alien-sounding.

So, I think I will try to finish reading the story I'm finding it difficult to get through, and relax with a cuppa instead.

So, yay for Michael Phelps! I stayed up to watch his final race last night, and cheered when they won. He seems like a nice kid, and his mom is a hoot.

But, I gotta say, Mark Spitz did it in a speedo and a mustache. And who over the age of 40 or so can forget that poster of him in said speedo with his seven gold medals gleaming on that broad chest? Oh, yeah.

I'm finding myself being sucked into the Olympics. They're showing different and interesting sports so far. Who knew there was such a thing as synchronized diving? Not I.

I'm switching back & forth between that and ST:TNG. And doing my nails (color tonight: Brocade). Yes, another exciting evening at Chez LizzieBelle! *g*

Ooh! Commercial for new Coen Brothers/ George Clooney movie! You know I will be there.

I actually slept until a little after nine this morning! That almost never happens. I was up late watching the Olympics, but not that late. It felt good.

Oh gods, I think I'm going to cry for the little Chinese girl (with fabulous purple eyeshadow, BTW) who just fell off the parallel bars. Get that camera out of her face! Sheesh.

Ahem. Yes, I'm multitasking. *g*

Anyhoo. I decided to stay home today, having been on the road every weekend for the last month. I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm for the Lammas Faire. I finished my laundry, then headed out for a walk in the woods. To see and read about my adventures, check out my photo blog.

The rain did finally come, while I was uploading my pix. Only a little, though; other nearby towns got hit harder. We've dodged the bullet a lot lately.

I made myself a steak for dinner, thanks to mom who brought me some on her last visit. I never buy steak, but every now & then it tastes good. Baby peas and red wine accompanied. Yum!

I love how, in the middle of a routine, the gymnasts suddenly remember to smile. *g*

The protests against China have forced officials to extinguish the torch as it passed through Paris.

I really wonder what the heck the Olympic committee was thinking when it awarded the games to China. That was not the best of moves, IMO. Sure, it'll shine a light on what's been going on there, but the government's brutal treatment of Tibetans (and its own people) can only get worse as it suppresses any voice other than the official party line. I fear for the Chinese and Tibetan people.
